Apple iPhone 5 to feature slimmer screen: WSJ

Apple is expected to unveil a new iPhone later this year with a slimmer screen thanks to updated touch-screen technology, a report said Tuesday.

The next generation iPhone, referred to by fans as the 'iPhone 5', is being manufactured by Asian component makers, Dow Jones Newswires quoted unnamed sources as saying.

Its panels will use "in-cell technology" integrating touch sensors into the LCD, it said.

That makes a separate touch-screen layer unnecessary and reduces the screen thickness by about half a millimetre, Dow Jones quoted DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase as saying.

The new technology will also boost displayed image quality, and help Apple cut costs as it would no longer have to buy touch panels and LCDs from separate suppliers, the report added.

It said Japanese liquid crystal display makers Sharp and Japan Display as well as South Korea's LG Display were currently mass producing panels for the next iPhone.

Apple is widely expected to launch the device in the third quarter of this year, around 12 months after the release of its hugely popular iPhone 4S -- the firm's first new product following the death of co-founder Steve Jobs.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the report or the next iPhone's release date when contacted by AFP.

The report came amid heated competition from rivals such as Samsung, whose flagship smartphone the Galaxy S III uses a 4.8-inch (12.2 centimetre) screen that is thinner than the current iPhone.

Apple posted a $11.6 billion profit in the first three months this year, led by record sales of iPad tablet computers and iPhones -- the latter surging 88 percent year-on-year.

Apple iPhone 5 may launch on Sept 12: Report

Apple is gearing up to unveil a new product at a major September 12 event, a source familiar with the plan said, presaging the long-awaited launch of the redesigned iPhone.

The world's most valuable technology company typically takes the wraps off its latest smartphones around the fall, allowing the gadget to hit store shelves in time for the peak holiday shopping season.

The fifth iteration of the device that helped revolutionise the mobile industry is expected to sport a thinner, larger screen and a smaller dock connector, among other tweaks, sources and analysts have said.

The company on Monday declined to comment.

Apple's iPhone launches are among the biggest affairs on Silicon Valley's calendar, scrutinized by technology investors, enthusiasts and consumers alike.

The Sept 12 date may shift, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Samsung Electronics launched its latest Galaxy device in recent months, stealing a march on Apple in an intensifying battle for mobile supremacy. The pair now command more than half of global smartphone sales.

Technology blog iMore first reported the debut of the new iPhone at a Sept 12 event earlier on Monday.

Apple iPhone 5 pre-orders to begin on September 12-Report

iMore which has earlier said that Apple would launch iPhone 5 event on September 12, 2012, now reveals that iPhone 5 pre-orders “are currently planned to begin that same day” in the U.S.

The blog on the website iMore has attributed this information to the sources that have provided it with accurate iPhone related launch dates in the past.

The fifth iteration of the device that helped revolutionize the mobile industry is expected to sport a thinner, larger screen and a smaller dock connector, among other tweaks, sources and analysts have told reuters.

Some analysts said a September release date for the new iPhone would work financially for Apple, helping the company end the calendar third quarter on a high note with a possible heavy demand for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Photos of what look like a close to final version of the iPhone 5 surfaced on the Internet last week showing its curved backplane, all of its buttons, the speakers, and its screen, as well as a headphone jack that has been relocated from the top of the phone to the bottom.

'Apple iPhone 5 pre-orders start September 12'

Apple will commence taking pre-orders for its next-generation iPhone on September 12, the day the device is expected to be rolled out, said a blog post on iMore. The website had earlier cited inside sources while pegging the launch date at September 12. It had also said that shipments of the device would begin just 9 days later, on September 21.

The post on iMore said that the pre-order for iPhone 5 in the US will start from September 12. On the other hand, it stated, buyers in the international market will be able to book the device in the first week of the following month, most probably from October 5.

Notably, Apple has never taken pre-order for any device so soon after launching it. However, last year, the Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled the iPhone 4S on October 4 and began taking bookings for the device just three days later.

The fifth generation iPhone is expected to feature a thinner and larger screen, smaller dock connector, and repositioned headphone jack and FaceTime camera. There have been many leaked images of the device in the past few months which confirm these rumours

Apple usually hosts iPhone launches during the fall so that products are readily available for sales during the holiday season. Samsung has scheduled an event of its own, Samsung Unpacked, on August 29 when it is expected to showcase the new Galaxy Note 2, just days before the speculated iPhone launch. Sony is also expected to launch a device, said to be the new flagship Xperia TX, on August 29.

Apple may launch iPhone 5, iOS 6 & new iPod on Sep 12

Apple is expected to launch the next edition of the iPhone on September 12, along with the eagerly awaited iOS 6 and the next-generation iPod touch.

Before 2011, Apple had always launched the iPhone in summers while the iPod was rolled out in the fall, for the holiday season. However, Apple deviated from that practice last year when it unveiled the iPhone 4S in October, whereas the only tweak in the iPod came in the form of an additional colour option. A complete overhaul of the iconic touch device is long overdue and many expect the manufacturer to bring out a completely refreshed version during the iPhone launch event itself.

This year, the same launch schedule is expected to be followed and iOS 6, which was first unveiled by Apple in June, will be officially rolled out too. The new version of the company's popular operating system features Apple's maps as it has done away with Google Maps. The mobile OS will also boast of new iCloud features, including 'Documents in the Cloud', which consists of new applications like Pages, Keynotes and Numbers, while some features such as Calendar and Contacts will be upgraded.

Along with these, FaceTime will be made compatible with 3G networks in the new iOS, while a new app called Passbook will allow users to book airline tickets. With iOS 6, Apple has removed the YouTube native app, though users can download it from Apple App Store.
