Railways terminates 16 caterers’ contracts for poor-quality food, overcharging

The railways has terminated contracts of 16 caterers for overcharging and serving poor-quality food to passengers in the last financial year, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in the Rajya Sabha today.

Indian Railways passengers can now check train status on WhatsApp

Indian Railways has partnered with MakeMyTrip to provide live status updates of trains through WhatsApp. Passengers can get updates regarding train timings, booking status, cancellation, platform number on which the train will arrive, by sending a request through WhatsApp.

In order to avail this facility, passengers are required to save the number 7349389104 (via MakeMyTrip) on their mobile phones. When an update is required, they will have to send a specific train number on the afore-mentioned number through WhatsApp, and details of the respective train will be provided to them.

Good news for train passengers! Indian Railways links locomotives via ISRO satellites | Business News

RTIS device installed in the locomotive detects position and speed of the train using GAGAN geo-positioning system, developed by ISRO.

"Based on this information and application logic, the device sends the train movement updates (arrival/departure/run through/unscheduled stoppages and mid-section updates) to a central location server in the CRIS data centre using S-band Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) of ISRO,"

The official said that the system was implemented on 8 January, on some of the mail or express trains on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Bandra Terminus, New Delhi-Patna, New Delhi-Amritsar and Delhi-Jammu routes.
