Porting process is bit lengthy for North East region.
So it would take 10 to 12 days instead of 4 which it does for urban areas but then once it's done, it's permanent relief na. So it's still worth the wait. The process is still the same na, generate the UPC and visit the Jio or Airtel gallery.

Will the number stay alive for all 10 to 12 days? This number is very important to me.

Yes ofcourse why not. Just to be safe you can submit the porting request when your plan has 15 days of validity left. The only duration you won't have service for is the half an hour when the network disappears on your existing sim and appears on your new sim. Usually around 11pm at night.

The sim as in a new physical sim?

Yes, when you port to a different operator you will always get a new sim. Same sim is only possible when changing from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa on the same operator.

In case of vi only not for jio or Airtel
I wonder what is stopping them from allowing on the same sim. It should be a simple change from the back end since it's the same subscriber and they have all their KYC details also, it's just a switch in how they decide to pay for the service. For technologically advanced carriers like Jio and Airtel it shouldn't be so difficult to implement.

I've recently converted my Jio Postpaid to Prepaid from the My Jio app itself. Vice-versa is also possible on the app. No need of sim change.

Airtel does the same. But we need to connect with their customer care in case of postpaid to prepaid! No need of sim change too.

Airtel representative couldn't do that for me two months ago, I heard the same thing about Jio, maybe facility is available in selected areas, other members request to share your experiences
