Dr Harsh Vardhan said all three vaccines in India undergoing trials have proven to be safe, immunogenic and efficacious in clinical trials outside India and need to undergo bridging studies to prove their safety and immunogenicity in the Indian population.

The minister said the government plans to receive and utilise 400-500 million Covid-19 vaccine doses and that of the 1.3 billion population, 20-25 crore people would be getting the first shot by July 2021.

Indian government expects a covid-19 vaccine to be ready for sale as early as December if clinical trials are successful, a senior health ministry official said. The Serum Institute of India has advanced the furthest in clinical trials in India, currently conducting phase 3 trials of Covidshield, which has been jointly developed by the UK’s AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

The coronavirus vaccine being developed by Oxford University and British firm AstraZeneca could be ready for public use in December 2020, Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) chief executive Adar Poonawalla has said. The Serum Institute is currently conducting the phase-3 trial of Oxford-AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine in India.
