The Asia Cup is set to undergo a drastic transformation, with the tournament likely to switch to Twenty20 format every alternate edition. According to Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) outgoing chief executive Syed Ashraful Haq, the tournament will remodel itself and include more Associate nations starting 2016. With the ACC winding up in June, there were speculations surrounding the future of the 31-year-old tournament, but Haq not only confirmed its continuation, but even said that Associate members such as Nepal, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and UAE will have active participation since they all have T20 status."It is correct that Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is being dwindled down to only two employees who will work from Singapore. Whatever the development work ACC used to do will now be done by the International Cricket Council. However, the Asia Cup will continue to take place after every two years. Its events have been slotted in for next eight years in the Future Tours Programme,"Haq told cricket.com.au. According to the new plan, the 2016 T20 Asia Cup will be held just prior to the T20 WC, which will be hosted by India in March. The next edition though, will revert back to ODI in 2018 ahead of the 2019 World Cup in England before again being played as a T20 in 2020. Haq believes this practice will allow Asian teams to prepare themselves accordingly for the ODI and T20 WCs."As there is a T20 WC tournament in 2016, the Asia Cup next year will also be of Twenty20 Internationals in February or March,"Haq said."The host country has not been decided yet. Bangladesh hosted the previous two Asia Cups in 2014 and 2012. There may be one or two teams from Associate nations as well. They could join India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the main tournament after playing a qualifying round. The year 2020 will again see the tournament in Twenty20 format and there will be another ODI (50-over) Asia Cup in 2022."The Asia Cup was first held in 1984, with India and Sri Lanka winning five titles each, while Pakistan has won the event twice.
