Apple iPad mini: Pricing, competition from Google, Amazon and more

Apple iPad mini: Pricing, competition from Google, Amazon and more

YejZO.jpg

Tablets seem to be the flavour of the season. Most companies have already launched their offerings for the upcoming shopping season. All eyes are now set on Apple and its proposed iPad mini, which the company is expected to announce on October 23.

Recently the pricing details of Microsoft Surface tablet were leaked online and revealed that 32GB version of the Surface RT without the Touch Cover will go for $499, while the with cover version is for $599. This revelation has also got the world talking about what should be the apt pricing for an Apple iPad mini. Going by the leaks, the 8GB Wi-Fi only variants of iPad mini might cost €249, while the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad mini will cost €349.

To get a better perspective, we quiz a few analysts in regards to what according to them should be the price for Apple iPad mini and how bullish they are about this new tablet.

According to John Strand of Stand Consult, "I think Apple will price its iPad mini somewhere between the iPhone and the iPad as I believe that Apple need to increase the numbers of products and price points." Only logical. This means that the new iPad mini that Apple might be outing will range somewhere between $199 (which is the price for an iPhone 5 on contract) and $500 (the price of WiFi only iPad).

While Stephen Baker, Vice President of Industry Analysis for Consumer Technology is more specific number as he states that the price of the Apple iPad mini will start from $299.

Commenting on this, Richard Ptak, Co-founder and Managing Partner at Ptak, Noel & Associates says, "Apple will make a mistake if it tries to protect the iPod from cannibalisation by over-pricing the iPad mini. The 'Job's Mystique' convinced Apple aficionados that they were 'super cool' by paying big bucks for an Apple product. With Jobs gone, it's only a question of time before that mystique fades away. Everyone is expecting Cook to price the mini so that it will be more expensive than the iPod - I think it's quite possible the mini could come in at a lower price point, say $199 and blow away the market.

Ptak feels that if iPad mini is indeed at this price point, it would fly off-the-shelves. "It wouldn't be hard to see eight or even 12 Million units sold in a year if they come in at a low price point. Hell, even I might buy one then," jokes Ptak. On a serious note, he adds, "But if Apple iPad mini is priced at $325 or higher, the first year sales will be about 2.5 million to 5 million".

Baker of NPD refrained from giving any specific sales number for the new iPad mini but said, "I believe the mini will be a very strong seller in its segment".

Strand of Stand Consult however, is not very convinced about the sales potential of this tablet. As he puts it, "I believe that the majority of the consumers will go for the "real stuff" and buy the iPhone and the iPad. It will be interesting to see about it will cannibalise on the iPhone and the iPad sale or whether it will expand the market and Apple's market share".

There is no denying that there are plenty of tablet options available in the market and Apple iPad mini will have to face stiff competition from Google's Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, so do the analysts feel that Apple's new device will be able to take the competition head on?

NPD's Baker does not feel that Apple doesn't need to worry about the competition. "Don't think Apple has to compete with the Kindle Fire or Google Nexus, I think they have to compete with (iPad mini). Once Apple comes out with a competitive product at a competitive price point those brands have to change from offering a lower cost alternative to the iPad to showing what they offer that is different from the iPad beyond just price, since Apple has now taken most of their price advantage away," he elaborates.

Ptak is not so convinced that Apple iPad mini will blow off the competition. He says, "I think Apple will be competitive. However, I'm not at all convinced it will blow away the competition, especially if they come in at a much higher price than the Fire or Nexus - we'll have to see what they finally deliver. The demand is for smaller, lighter, better quality, more features - still this is a 'low-end' tablet - Apple will have a (slightly) larger screen with less resolution - which argues against a much higher price and Apple can't afford to 'handicap' a low end product by cutting quality or reducing features."

Strand too feels that Apple should prepare itself for tough competition, "The tablet market will me more fragmented, as it is not the first mini tablet to hit the shelves. It will probably compete with Samsung and Kindles. I believe that Apple iPad mini will get tough competition. Kindle users are extreme loyal to Amazon and so are the users of Android."

Colorful iPad Mini

Rumor Has It: Is Apple's next bright idea a colorful iPad Mini ?
This week, we ask: "If you were a color, what color would you be?" Metallic blue? Or iPod Shuffle purple? Also, Sony might be making a Google Nexus phone and Apple might have a few computers on display next week.

The best news about Apple sending out invites to a (probable) iPad Mini event next week, is that we can finally stop talking about iPad Mini rumors. Finally.

What we don't know yet, however, are any specifics. Will it be 7 inches? Will it come in a rainbow of colors? How much will it cost? All our questions will be answered next week.

Remember that we have a big bet riding on this one -- if Apple in fact announces the iPad Mini next week, Emily has to do something embarrassing! -- so leave us a comment and give us some suggestions on what humiliating thing Emily can do. This should be good, folks.

Also this week, Sony might be coming up with a Nexus device of its own, and what if the Mini that comes out next week is actually an updated Mac Mini? Doubt it. Though it might come out along with the new iPad.

Apple unveils iPad Mini at $329

NEW DELHI: Apple on Tuesday unveiled iPad Mini, a smaller version of the original iPad, with a 7.9-inch touchscreen, starting at $329.

iPad Mini runs on dual-core A5 processor, FaceTime HD camera and 5MP iSight camera (with1080p recording). This tablet will compete with the likes of Google Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD.

The company also refreshed the regular iPad, launched in March this year and made it faster and added the new 8-pin Lightening dock, which was introduced in September with iPhone 5.

The tablet now also runs on a brand new A6X processor, which provides it with twice the CPU and graphics processing capabilities. It can now work on 4G LTE networks and Wi-Fi, and still offers the same 10 hours of promised battery life.

The new iPad Mini runs on iOS 6 and features the 8-pin Lightning dock. Battery back-up of the all-new Apple iPad Mini will be 10 hours, same as that of the full-sized iPad.

According to Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, iPad Mini has 35% extra screen space than routine 7-inch tablets, its current rivals. Since iPad Mini has the same screen resolution, all existing apps for iPad will run smoothly.

Apple is offering the Wi-Fi only iPad Mini in 16, 32 and 64GB capacities at $329, $429 and $519 respectively. For the 4G-compatible versions of the device, users will have to shell out an additional $130 for each variant. iPad mini and ipad 4G will be up for pre-orders on Oct 26. The Wi-Fi versions will start shipping on November 2, while the cellular-enabled models will hit the shelves two weeks later.

Apple also refreshed its computer line-up today by unveiling new versions of iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini.

Before his death, Apple founder Steve Jobs had in 2010 vehemently opposed the idea of a smaller iteration of the Apple's tablet, though company documents have revealed that he warmed up to the idea later on.

However, 7-inch tablets have done well in the market and gained traction worldwide, specially at lower price points. In India, the market for budget tablets is booming and many companies have 7-inch Android tablets priced at under Rs 10,000.

The launch of iPad Mini indicates that Apple is changing its strategy with respect to lower-priced Android tablets. Samsung tab Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the highest priced tablet among the competitors of iPad Mini and costs approximately Rs 28,000, a price point that Apple's small tablet is unlikely to hit. It is positioned in the $350 segment, where the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is at present. If Apple maintains this pricing for India, then it would be offering a new, technologically up-to-date product to consumers at a lower price than its bitter rival.

Another challenger for Apple iPad Mini is Google Nexus 7, which is expected to cost less than Rs 20,000 in India. Apple iPad Mini might lose some customers to Google due to its higher pricing, which would put the iPad Mini out of reach of the segment that prefers lower-priced tablets. But with its cutting edge features, the iPad Mini may entice a new segment of buyer that prefers iPad.

iPad 4, mini release date by country

The Apple event couldn’t have surprised us more with an iPad 4 and mini release date within a matter of days, and the crazy part about that is a 6 month product cycle for the full size iPad, which will certainly make some 3rd generation owners angry. Today we wanted to show you some screenshots from the event yesterday, which also detail some important features and of course the iPad 4/mini pre-order and release dates.

Apple revealed the list of countries that will see a release date first, and these can be seen in the screenshot below that we took during the Oct 23 event. You’ll see that the United States and UK are obviously one of the first to see the iPad 4 and mini launch, but also a growing list of countries for an initial launch. These also include Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Australia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Italy, Slovakia, and many more seen below.

Both the Apple iPad 4 and mini will go up for pre-order this Friday, Oct 26, and this date will surely see shipping times slip pretty fast as with most Apple pre-orders, so if you want one early then you need to place the order right away. You can see two dates in the screenshots below, which show when Apple announced the pre-order and release date for the Wi-Fi iPad 4 and mini. It is worth noting that Apple Retail Stores will be open from 8am to take orders on Nov 2.

If you’re interested in the Wi-Fi plus Cellular option than you’d need to wait another 2 weeks before you can get your hands on one, and this goes for both the iPad 4 and mini. They should see a release date in mid November, which had been explained at the event along with the reach Apple has with 3G/4G carriers as seen in the images below.

The image below is a screenshot taken during the event that compares the prices for iPad mini vs. iPad 2 and the iPad with Retina display, or also known as the 4th generation iPad. These prices take into account the different storage sizes, 16GB/32GB/64GB, and the options of Wi-Fi only or also with a Cellular option.

You can see the iPad mini and iPad 4 back-to-back in the image below, and this clearly shows the difference in size between the two tablets. The image after this shows the iPad 4 and mini screen ratio compared, which is exactly the same and this means much better app support that’s more painless for consumers and developers. You’ll also see another image showing the iPad mini held in one hand at the Apple event, again something that hadn’t been easy with the 10-inch version although is possible with a 7.9-inch iPad mini.

iPad mini available online in India: Starting price Rs 26,990!

iPadmini-India_Tradus.jpg

Apple’s much talked about iPad mini is already available for India online, according to a report by CNN-IBN.

The report noted that the device is available on online site Tradus in 3 versions – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, which are priced at Rs 26,990, Rs 34,990 and Rs 43,490, respectively; prices include all taxes. All three versions available on Tradus are WiFi only models.

India was not on the list of countries where the device was to be officially launched on 2 November, and there has been no word on when and if Apple plans to introduce it here. The company’s flagship iPhone 5 was also launched last week in India, months after it was released in other countries.

The key features of the iPad mini include a 7.9 inch screen (diagonally) with a screen resolution of 1024×768 pixels making it around 163 pixels per inch. It does not have Retina Display quality, like the iPad 3 and the 4th generation iPad.

The iPad mini is also armed with a dual-core A5 processor chip, a 1.2 megapixel FaceTime camera with HD and a 5 megapixel camera. It is 4G LTE enabled as well. As far as battery is concerned, the mini can function around 10 hours if you’re just on Wi-Fi and around 9 hours if you’re using a data connection. It also comes with the new Lightning conductor that powers the iPhone 5.

The device is also lighter, thinner and provides more screen space than rival offerings.

Some analysts have however, said the iPad mini too expensive, especially in comparison to competitors’ offerings, such as Google’s Nexus tablets and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. It costs $329, while Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD tablets are both priced starting at $199.

However Apple has stood by its pricing policy, saying they believe consumers will be willing to pay more for quality.
