Next Apple tablets to be the iPad HD and the iPad Mini?

artImg198x166_8916.jpg

Apple’s tablet event is just around the corner and the rumour mills keep churning out new information everyday. The latest report suggests that the new 10-inch device will not be called the iPad 3 but the iPad HD instead and may sport that Retina Display everyone’s anxious to see.The speculated display resolution is expected to be a whopping 2048 x 1536.

The reports also suggest that Apple may be drifting away from the traditional serial numbering of future iteration of products and hence the name of the device may be the iPad HD instead of the iPad 3. These rumours may be believable as the long-time Apple accessory suppliers, Griffin and Belkin, have accessories listed for the next iPad as the iPad HD as reported by Gizmodo. Apple has played the naming game in the past to highlight certain features of its products. The iPhone 3G was the first 3G iPhone, the touch based iPod was called the iPod Touch so on and so forth.

Other reports on the Internet claim that Apple may also unveil a 7-inch version of the iPad called the “iPad Mini”. This device may launch in Q3 of 2012 and is expected to take on the Kindle Fire and Samsung’s 7-inch tablet. The rumours of the iPad Mini may be a bit far-fetched considering that the late Steve Jobs wasn’t a big fan of the form factor. But the success of the Kindle Fire may have led to Apple rethinking its strategy. After all, Tim Cook is the man in charge now and he may want to tap this hot mini tablet market.

All rumours will be put to rest, as Apple will unveil its next gen tablet or tablets on March 7th 2012.

Leaked New iPad mini part

When the iPad was announced in January 2010 it forced the consumer electronics industry to scramble to create a competitive product. The first iPad “killers”, take the Samsung Galaxy Tab or the HTC Flyer for example, were basically Android smartphones with a larger screen. It wasn’t until early 2011, when Google launched Android 3.0 Honeycomb, that the search giant actually had a tablet operating system to offer their partners. Sadly, Honeycomb was garbage, and by then the thinner and lighter iPad 2 had already hit the market. Then something happened. A light bulb turned on. Companies began to realize that there’s no point in competing in the 10 inch tablet space with Apple, so why not invent a new 7 inch tablet market? And with that the Amazon Kindle Fire, the Barnes & Noble Nook, and several other tablets were born. The most recent of such tablets, the ASUS manufactured Google Nexus 7, has been widely praised as being the first actual iPad competitor worthy of your money. At $250 for the 16 GB version it’s also a steal.

So the obvious question is will Apple make a 7 inch tablet? Rumors about a smaller iPad have been circulating for about a year already, but now we’re starting to see more and more evidence that it’s actually coming. The image above, which comes from the French website NowhereElse, shows what’s allegedly the iPad mini’s flex cable. Supposedly Apple is going to announce a smaller iPad at their next event, which is unofficially due to take place on September 12th.

The key question here is price. Apple offers the third generation iPad for $499, and the second generation iPad for $399, so does that mean a smaller iPad would go for $299? That’s only $50 more than the 16 GB Nexus 7, and for that amount of cash you’ll get access to all the applications in Apple’s ecosystem, plus what we can only assume to be better build quality.

Bloomberg reaffirms iPad mini October release

Bloomberg-reaffirms-iPad-mini-October-release.jpg

The iPad mini will be released in October with a 7.85-inch screen, smaller than the 9.7-inch one on the original iPad, according to Bloomberg who got another confirmation from four different sources in the know.

The smaller display will be made by AU Optronics, the company making the screens for Apple MacBooks and Sony television sets, but so far with no experience in making screens for mobile devices. LG Display will be the other company making the 7.85-inch displays.

Rumors agree that the 7.85-inch screen will not be a Retina display, but rather feature the resolution of the original iPad which is 768 x 1024 pixels. The display makers and Apple denied official comments on these latest whispers.

iPad Mini launching in October

Apple is set to unveil a smaller version of its tablet iPad --popularly being called iPad Mini -- in October, according to a report in Fortune. The article by Philip Elmer-DeWitt cites a 'major Apple investor' as its source.

According to the report, press invites to the iPad Mini launch event would go out on October 10 for the event scheduled for October 17. The device is expected to go on sale on November 2.

Analysts believe the time to be right for the device to make it for the Christmas sales in the US.

Earlier Bloomberg reported that Apple will use screens from AU Optronics and LG Display for a smaller version of the iPad to be released in October.

The device is rumoured to measure 7.85 inches diagonally. Current iPads measure 9.7 inches.

Smaller iPad is expected to help Apple fend off competion from the smaller and cheaper tablets from companies like Amazon Inc.

iPad Mini could hit stores November 2

ipad-mini5_610x563.jpg

The smaller tablet we thought we'd never see from Apple could be in many consumers' hands on November 2.
That's the on-sale date for the iPad Mini that is being touted in a fresh round of rumors this morning, and given Apple's record of releasing new products on a Friday, roughly 10 days after unveiling it in a hype-filled media event, it makes sense to me, too.

Apple has already announced and sent out invitations for a media event on October 23 ("We've got a little more to show you"), and it's widely expected to be centered on a new iPad with a 7.8-inch display that could be priced as low as $249. For the full details of what we expect to see, check out Scott Stein's rundown.
The holiday shopping season is shaping up to be an Ultimate Fighting Championship of tablets, with Microsoft's Surface dropping in a few weeks, and persistent rumors of an uber-cheap new Google Nexus tablet. Let's hope Apple has been brushing up on its jiujitsu moves to be able to compete.
