Yes you can. Just register with your airtel number. I am also using it with my Jio data & non airtel DTH RMN.

Should that sim card be in the phone?

Airtel tv downloaded and when im going to register with RMN, after registration they will forcing only option comes to take airtel prepare card with data balance details

No if it's your DTH RMN then airtel sim is not required but if your RMN is Jio then you may not get access to live TV.
