Yes even though 900 MHz is the costliest band they own, there is limited spectrum that they can surrender in it. Major bulk may come from the mid bands 1800 and 2100 MHz where they may retain 10 MHz and surrender the rest. Vi has a low subscriber base now that most have ported out to Jio and Airtel so they don't need as much mid band spectrum.

From September the moratorium on AGR dues is ending and Vi doesn't have the funds to pay for it and not much equity left to offer the government either. So they will have to take tough calls.

I'm hoping even Rcom and Aircel use this opportunity to surrender their liberalised spectrum which they are no longer using so as to reduce their capital outgo and more spectrum could become available in upcoming auctions for Jio and Airtel to buy as well.
Esmail sir
Vi agar future me L2100 me only 10mhz bandwith rakhigi to speed me koi farq aayega kya? Like , mere area ( up east rural) me vi L2100 ( 20mhz) par service de rhi h...abhi to speed sahi aa rhi h 100-120mbps, but agr 10 mhz return kar degi to speed me farq aayega kya?

T: If in future Vi keeps only 10MHz bandwidth in L2100 then will there be any difference in speed? Like, in my area (up east rural) Vi is providing service on L2100 (20MHz)...right now the speed is fine 100-120Mbps, but if it returns 10MHz then will there be any difference in speed?

Airtel and Jio won't buy band 1 spectrum at all. Jio won't for sure. Airtel might buy in West Bengal or Kolkata where they don't have band 1 spectrum. Airtel and Jio might want to make band 3 20Mhz in most of their circles, that's where this return comes into picture. But again, how Vi can survive without these bands, I am not sure. Airtel will definitely bid for band 3 in their leadership circles where band 3 is just 10 or 15Mhz, Airtel will make it 20Mhz. Jio will most probably make band 3 20Mhz in most possible circles and move band 40 to 5G.
Exactly, vi agr L2100 ( 20 mhz bandwith) me se 10mhz bandwith reduce kar degi to fir inka future hi kya bachega siwaay new sim k saath 1 kg sugar bechane k🙆‍♂️

T: Exactly, if they will reduce 10mhz bandwidth from L2100 (20mhz bandwidth) then what will be their future except selling 1 kg sugar with new sim🙆‍♂️

yes true except kolkata airtel has band 1 everywhere with at least 10 -15 mhz per circle of which 5 mhz are expiring in 2030
Bro, up east circle me bhi airtel k paas band 1 me sirf 5mhz h...wo bhi rarely use hota h

T: Bro, in up east circle also airtel has only 5mhz on band 1. That too is used rarely

Yes ofcourse the speed will reduce in proportion to the reduction in bandwidth. But for Vi it is a matter of survival. When given a choice between holding more spectrum and not being able to pay for it or surrendering it and managing to survive in the market, Vi will obviously choose the second option.
The amount of spectrum it currently holds is due to Vodafone and Idea both individually buying it for their subscribers but after the merger the subscriber base shrunk considerably and the spectrum held became surplus with no option to surrender and no other operator keen on buying it from them.
If they are unable to pay the AGR dues after the end of moratorium period, they will have to shut operations completely. That's why it's better to surrender spectrum and give some more equity to the government and manage to survive in the market for few more years.
