As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) latest report on the telecom subscriber base, as of January 2023, the total number of telephone subscribers in India has increased marginally to 1,170.75 million, marking a growth rate of 0.15% compared to the previous month.
The report also indicates that the wireless subscriber base in the country grew to 1,146.98 million, marking a growth rate of 0.15% compared to the previous month, whereas the wireline subscriber base declined to 23.77 million.
In terms of wireless subscribers, Reliance Jio led the market with a 38.62% market share, followed by Bharti Airtel with a 29.83% market share, and Vodafone Idea with a 23.39% market share. However, Vodafone Idea continues to lose subscribers, with the TRAI report indicating that the company lost 7.9 million subscribers in January 2023.
On the other hand, both Jio and Airtel gained subscribers at the expense of Vodafone Idea. The report reveals that Jio added 3.4 million subscribers in January 2023, while Airtel added 0.8 million subscribers.
The broadband subscriber base in India also witnessed a growth of 1.03% to 821.87 million, with wireless broadband subscribers accounting for 661.82 million and wireline broadband subscribers accounting for 160.05 million.
In terms of broadband subscribers, Reliance Jio remained the leader with a 55.38% market share, followed by Bharti Airtel with a 23.31% market share and Vodafone Idea with a 14.72% market share.
The TRAI report also indicated that the total number of telephone subscribers in urban areas stood at 650.18 million, while rural areas had 520.56 million subscribers. Additionally, the wireless subscriber base in urban areas was 626.62 million, while in rural areas, it was 520.36 million.
