Microsoft has announced that it will be shutting down its Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Xbox 360 users will no longer be able to purchase new games, DLCs, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console. Furthermore, the Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com), where users can buy new games and avatars, will not be available for new purchases after the closure date.
The company is also removing the Movies & TV app from the Xbox 360 Console. Xbox 360 users will no longer be able to watch movie content after July 29, 2024. However, the purchased content will be available to watch via the Movies & TV app on Windows 11 or 10 devices, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Microsoft has clarified that users can continue to play their already purchased Xbox 360 games or DLCs. Moreover, Xbox 360 game content previously purchased will still be available to play on the Xbox 360 console and the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S devices through backward compatibility.
The shutdown of the Xbox 360 Store will not affect the ability to re-download Xbox 360 games or play multiplayer games. Users can still connect and play with friends through multiplayer on the games they already own, as long as the publisher supports the online servers.
“A lot has changed since the Xbox 360 launched in 2005. Technology has evolved, expectations from players have shifted, and we are focused on making Xbox Series X|S the best place to play now and in the future. What has not changed is our commitment to preserving your ability to play the content you have already purchased on your preferred device, which means we are committed to supporting Xbox 360 gameplay for the foreseeable future – and you will still be able to play and re-download previously purchased content and connect with friends,” said Dave McCarthy, CVP Xbox Player Services.
Users will be able to save their game progress to the cloud and transfer those to the newer Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles. In addition, users can also purchase and play hundreds of backward-compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles and DLC on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com.
