India’s leading telecom service provider Reliance Jio and internet behemoth Google yesterday announced considerable progress towards the launch of JioPhone Next, the made-for-India smartphone jointly developed by both companies. The duo in a joint statement said that JioPhone Next was in advanced trials with festive season rollout to commence before Diwali.
The companies have already started testing JioPhone Next through limited set users for further refinement and actively working to make it available more widely in time for a Diwali rollout. The launch of JioPhone Next has been delayed due to the global semi-conductor shortage making it difficult to manage supply chains.
“This additional time will also help mitigate the current industry-wide, global semiconductor shortages,” said Jio in a statement.
JioPhone Next will come with Google Assitant, automatic read-aloud, language translation for any on-screen text, and a smart camera with India-centric filters. It will feature an operating system based on Android and Play Store. JioPhone Next will offer premium capabilities that were until now resonant with powerful smartphones including voice-free features enabling people to consume content and navigate the phone in their own language. The phone will also deliver the latest Android feature and security updates.
