Jio has announced today that it will no longer provide free unlimited calls to its users till TRAI removes the IUC charges. The company said in a statement that Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) fixed by TRAI is 6 paise per minute which have caused Jio to pay Rs.13,500 crore in the last 3 years to other operators.
IUC is a cost paid by one mobile telecom operator to another when its customers make outgoing mobile calls to the other operator’s customers. These inter-operator calls are also called mobile off-net calls.
To prevent this loss now All outgoing calls from Jio to other operators will be charged at 6 paise per minute Plus GST and processing fee. Jio has launched new tariff plans ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 100 to make outgoing calls.
Jio said that it receives 25 to 30 crore missed calls on a daily basis which causes callbacks made by the Jio customers and result in 65 to 75 crore minutes of outgoing traffic and these calls are making the operator lose a significant fortune.
Jio assured that calls be free again after 31st December 2019 when TRAI is expected to move to Zero termination charge regime. In the meantime calls from Jio to Jio, all incoming calls and Jio to Landline calls will remain Free.
