Windows 10 to bring 3-D to two-dimensional experiences

Microsoft wants to bring life to common computing experiences by adding a third dimension to widely used software such as Windows and Office.

The new tools, part of a free ``Creators Update'' to Windows 10 early next year, promise to make it easy for people to create and share photos, drawings and other images in 3-D.

Microsoft also announced a high-end desktop called Surface Studio. Costing about $3,000, the Studio will be targeted at creators such as architects, artists and engineers, many of whom have long used Apple's Mac computers. The Studio's 28-inch display is on a flexible hinge, so users can view it straight on, or tilt it to as low as 20 degrees for drafting. Wednesday's announcements in New York come a day before Apple is expected to refresh its Mac lineup.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, said innovations over the past decade have been focused on ``helping us consume more information and media in different formats.'' He said the next decade will be defined by technology that empowers people to create.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Jackdaw Research, said Microsoft has been pushing business products and services lately. Dawson said the company ``has needed a rallying point for a set of efforts around consumer use cases, and it appears to have decided on creativity as the catchphrase for this push.''

Dawson said that Microsoft seems to be challenging not just Apple's success with professional creators, but wants to embrace a broader base of consumers, too.

While the Studio will likely be a niche product, the Windows update will have broader reach.

With the 3-D tools, for instance, instead of taking a regular photo of a sand castle in two dimensions a beach-goer will be able to scan all sides of the castle with a phone. Microsoft's tools will convert that into 3-D; viewers can rotate the virtual sand castle on the screen with their fingers. Microsoft plans to make it easy to share that on social media and even send to 3-D printers.

Business presentations can be enhanced as 3-D support comes to PowerPoint; you can rotate an object to focus on a particular angle. Microsoft's image-editing software Paint will also enable people to create 3-D artworks by combining existing 2-D images with newly scanned objects in three dimensions. Microsoft is launching a service called Remix 3D for people to share and showcase their 3-D creations.

Another Windows feature promises help people communicate more easily with friends and family. Windows will try to make multiple apps for video calls, email and chats seamless by letting users simply choose the person to send to rather than the app to send with. Microsoft, maker of the Xbox gaming console, will also offer live broadcasting of game play.

Microsoft also announced higher-end versions of the Surface Book laptop but left its Surface Pro 4 tablets untouched, starting at about $900. For all Surface devices, Microsoft will sell Surface Dial, a $99 circular accessory with new ways to scroll and navigate. Many of its capabilities, though, will require the Studio's touch screen.

In anticipation of Thursday's Mac announcement, Microsoft will let existing Mac laptop owners trade their devices in for new Surface tablets and laptops, but not the Studio.

The 8 biggest announcements from today's Microsoft event

Microsoft wants artists and content creators to want its products. The company unveiled multiple creative-minded products at its keynote today, including a major Windows 10 upgrade called the “Creators Update” and a gorgeous PC called the Surface Studio. It has 80 custom parts in its arm alone! Most of today's announcements were about advancing into the future, but Microsoft also stayed true to its roots with an update to Paint. We have all the highlights below.

Windows 10 Creators Update

Windows 10 is getting a new major update for early 2017, dubbed the "Creators Update." Highlights of the update include the addition of new 3D creation tools, live-streaming and custom tournaments for the Xbox app, and a focus on communicating with close contacts by putting "people at the center of the Windows experience." Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft's Windows and devices group, says he wants Windows 10 to "have the effect of the Gutenberg press on the next wave of computing."

3D Paint

Microsoft relaunched and revamped its classic Paint app with a focus on 3D. The new app lets users easily turn photos into 3D "memories," export three-dimensional Minecraft creations, doodle in 3D, and make most anything an interactive object. Microsoft is betting people will want to view their work on the HoloLens or on a multitude of other VR and AR headsets. Users who don't want to buy new hardware for their Paint creations can also just share their work directly to Facebook.

Windows VR headsets

In addition to the HoloLens platform, Microsoft announced its first foray into virtual reality with VR headsets for Windows 10. The headsets will start at $299 and run the same Windows Holographic platform as the HoloLens. While no concrete release date has been announced yet, Microsoft did say that HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer will all be making headsets.

Xbox live streaming

Live broadcasting is built into the Xbox app in the Windows 10 Creators Update. Streaming works as part of Xbox Live, allowing people to follow along with their existing Xbox Live friends. Games can also integrate comments and suggestions from viewers directly in-game. Microsoft is also updating its Arena platform to let players create their own challenges and custom tournaments. The Creators Update adds Dolby Atmos audio support to the Xbox, too.

Windows People

Microsoft emphasized its desire to help users interact with the most important people in their life, like spouses, best friends, and family. With the Creators Update, communications with these "key people" can be done directly in the task bar, where users can drag and drop content. Microsoft also showed off a feature akin to the Facebook poke, called "taps," that lets people send each other stickers of 3D objects as a gentle reminder that they're still alive.

Surface Studio

Microsoft announced the latest member of its Surface hardware lineup, the Surface Studio, a touchscreen all-in-one desktop computer that’s only 12.5mm thick. Spec-wise, the Studio has a 28-inch PixelSense display, GeForce 980M, an Intel i7 processor, and up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage. The Studio also has a "zero-gravity hinge" that allows the screen to tilt down at a sharp angle, allowing it to move from a more traditional computer design to a drafting board form factor for drawing and creative work. Preorders start today for $2,999, with "limited quantities" available for this holiday season.

Surface Dial

The Surface Dial is a new input device for Microsoft's latest Surface products. The device provides haptic feedback and users twist it to select items from an on-screen menu — for example, a color picker. The Surface Studio takes it one step further, allowing you to place the Dial directly onto the screen for contextual software control. The Dial will be out in November for $99.99, but comes free with Surface Studio preorders.

Surface Book i7

Microsoft didn’t show off a new Surface Book, but instead upgraded last year's model to include Intel’s i7 processor and a bigger battery. The Surface Book i7 will be available in November for $2,399 and is said to reach up to 16 hours of battery life, even with more graphics power and an extra fan to keep everything cool.

What’s next

Microsoft is pushing a narrative in which everyone is a creator, so we’re likely to continue seeing products around that idea. It doesn't matter whether someone prefers Excel to Paint, Microsoft wants to be a part of the creative process, however a user wants to interpret that. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said he wants to bring "mixed realities" to life through 3D content, AR, and the marrying of Windows with Office and gaming.

It looks like Microsoft will compete with Apple's Garageband home music creation software with a new Groove Music Maker app. The sizzle reel showed an app that lets people mix instrumental and vocal tracks, plus apply basic effects like reverb.

2. A revamped Windows Defender

It's reminiscent of features like Apple's Reading List in Safari, which also lets users keep a list of articles and sites for later perusal.

5. Collections of places in Maps
Microsoft's Maps app is getting a new section called Collections, which appear to be exactly what they sound like -- groupings of places. It also seems like there will be some mechanism in the app for sharing those collections between friends, but it's not immediately clear how that will work

The Start menu shows a new Cortana live tile, along with an icon for a Battery Level Live tile.
The former seems like a good way for people to get contextual information from Microsoft's virtual assistant, and the latter seems like a useful tool for people with laptops and tablets.

7. Custom accent colors
People who want to further customize the way Windows looks will be able to pick from a full palette of accent colors, rather than the handful of swatches that Microsoft allows today. It also looks like Windows will tell users when the color they picked might be unreadable.

8. In-app purchases from the Windows Store home screen
The Windows Store will get support for selling in-app purchases directly from its home screen.

9. Time Limits On Gaming
This looks like a feature that will be a boon to parents who are looking to keep a handle on the gaming time that their kids have available. A notification pops up over this Minecraft footage telling the player that they have five minutes left, though it's unclear what happens after time's up.

10. Redesigned Quick Actions
It looks like Microsoft might be taking this opportunity to at least partially redesign Action Center's quick actions capabilities to make it easier for people to do things like adjust internet settings, volume, and brightness.

11. Pick up where you left off working
It looks like the Action Center, which houses notifications and quick access to settings, will also start giving users the chance to get access to files they have been working with on other devices.
It seems like an attempt to better compete with Apple's Continuity features in Mac OS and iOS, which also let people pick up where they left off on their i Phonesi Pads, Apple Watches, and Macs.

Google discloses critical security vulnerability in Windows

Two Google employees working for the Threat Analysis Group have publicly disclosed a critical Microsoft Windows vulnerability . The privilege escalation bug can allow malicious attackers to bypass security sandboxes and gain control of a system. Google has information that the vulnerability is being actively used by miscreants, and have announced the vulnerability so that users can take measures to protect themselves.

The vulnerability was reported to Adobe and Microsoft engineers on 21 October. On 26 October, Adobe released a security update after working closely with the Google Threat Analysis Group. Adobe Flash Player was affected by the vulnerability, and the security patch prevents attackers from gaining control of the system. However, Microsoft has neither released a security patch, nor issued an advisory to its users.

This is a class of exploits known as zero day exploits. These are previously unknown vulnerabilities, that have not been identified yet as an issue, and which the company is not currently patching. Google allows itself and other companies seven days to either patch or notify users of a critically vulnerable zero day exploits. These are vulnerabilities which leaves a large number of users exposed, with the chances of exploitation increasing on a daily basis. Google is publicly announcing the vulnerability, according to the guidelines laid down in the critical vulnerability policy of Google.

To avoid being affected by the vulnerability, users are advised to upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Flash player, if automatic updates are not enabled. Users of Microsoft Windows have to wait till Microsoft itself releases a security patch. Users are advised to install the Windows update and the Microsoft update when they come available.
