Microsoft says Russia-linked hackers exploiting Windows flaw

The software maker said in an advisory on its website there had been a small number of attacks using "spear phishing" emails from a hacking group known Strontium, which is more widely known as "Fancy Bear," or APT 28. Microsoft did not identify any victims.

Microsoft said a patch to protect Windows users against the newly discovered threat will be released on Nov. 8, which is Election Day. It was not clear whether the Windows vulnerability had been used in any of the recent U.S. political hacks.

Representatives of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security could not immediately be reached for comment.
Microsoft chided rival Google for going public with details of the vulnerabilities before it had time to prepare and test a patch to fix them.

"Google’s decision to disclose these vulnerabilities before patches are broadly available and tested is disappointing, and puts customers at increased risk," Microsoft said.

Microsoft wants to make Windows updates smaller with UUP

Microsoft has rolled out Windows Insiders with its latest build called Unified Update Platform (UUP). Microsoft’s UUP is a differential download package that allows users to download only the changes that have been made since the last time they updated their device, instead of a full build. The UUP effectively reduces the size of download and the differential download is available on all devices built on the Mobile as well as PC OS. “As we rollout UUP, this will eventually be impactful for PCs where users can expect their download size to decrease by approximately 35% when going from one major update of Windows to another,” said Bill Karagounis, Director of Program Management, Windows Insider Program & OS Fundamentals in a blogpost.

Microsoft says it has made checking for updates by the devices more efficient. Now, when a device will check for update using UUP, the Windows Update service will evaluate which updates are needed by a given device and then returns these updates to the device for download and install. This will result in faster checks for update operations as well.

“It’s important to note that with UUP, nothing will look or behave differently on the surface, UUP is all underlying platform and service optimization that happens behind the scenes,” says Bill. Microsoft has started rolling out UUP Mobile devices, which will be made available in stages. The company is expected to start using UUP for PC Insider builds later this year and then IoT and HoloLens shortly after.

Microsoft Home Hub software coming to Windows 10 in 2017

For past few days, Microsoft is in the headline constantly for its ambitious Home Hub project, which was once thought to be a competitor for Amazon Echo and Google Home.

As per the latest news, the Home Hub is nothing of that sort and it is a feature designed for Windows 10 specifically to make the PC’s more communal and interactive.

According to the sources, the Home Hub is not a dedicated device, but a software on the PC without any additional hardware requirement. This feature is compatible only on Windows 10 PCs including All-In-Ones and 2-in-1’s with touch screens. This has all the feature just like Amazon Echo and Google Home with an additional screen, which make things more approachable.

The software giant is also planning to integrate sharing features, new user interfaces, always-listening Cortana, and apps that take advantage of new APIs, to make it more compelling. Additionally, this functionality will be extended to other platforms including Android, iOS, and Windows 10 Mobile.

Moreover, the company is also planning to manufacture All-in-Ones specifically for Home Hub with other OEMs like Lenovo and HP. However, the project has been delayed due to more refinement and improvements that need to be made to Windows 10.
