CUTTACK: The last day of the third Test match between India and the West Indies in Mumbai can very well be considered to be the prelude to the five-match ODI series which kicks-off with a day-night match at the Barabati stadium on Tuesday.

A dramatic turn of events saw 17 wickets tumble for 295 runs on the last day of the final Test. Although the match ended in a draw with scores tied, the thrilling finish would have done wonders to the morale of the visiting side ahead of the ODIs.

But limited-overs cricket is a different ball game, and it is no surprise that both teams have made a number of changes to their respective squads.

While India have opted for a youthful brigade to be led by seasoned opener Virender Sehwag, West Indies have included two new faces - Trinidadian top-order batsman Jason Mohammed and unconventional spinner Sunil Narine - in their 15-man squad.

Abhimanyu Mithun of Karnataka will replace Praveen Kumar, who is down with a chest injury, in the Indian squad named for the first three ODI against the West Indies.

In a press release, the BCCI secretary, Sanjay Jagdale, said Praveen was suffering from a “blunt chest on the left side'' and was ruled out of the first three one-day International matches, the first of which is to be played at the Barabati Stadium here on Tuesday.

Praveen Kumar, who played a first class match last against Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy at Meerut from November 10 to 13, bowled just one over for Uttar Pradesh in the second innings of Saurashtra. He delivered 27 overs in the first innings.

It is understood that Praveen picked up the injury during the October 29 Twenty20 match played at the Eden Gardens against England and sought a two-week break from the Board. He returned to play in the Ranji game but the injury seemed to have resurfaced following which he opted out.

Perfect chance for youngsters to perform at big stage: Sehwag

India are without some key senior players, including captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, for the ODI series against the West Indies but stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag today said that it would give a perfect opportunity for the youngsters in the team to perform well at the big stage.

Besides Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, who have been given rest, the squad also does not have middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh who have declared himself unfit, but Sehwag said his side would not be worried as the youngsters have come into the series with plenty of runs under their belt.

“All the players are in fine form, having scored good amount of runs in Ranji Trophy. It's a good sign for Team India. Hope the youngsters play the same way with Team India,” Sehwag told reporters on the eve of the first ODI against the West Indies.

“We have a very good young side. It's good for youngsters they are getting opportunities. They have five games to show their skills. If they perform well we can continue fielding a young side. We are pretty confident to do well. I promise that we will give our best shots. If we can put more than 100 percent the results will show,” said Sehwag.

Sammy: We need more consistency

After putting up a much-improved show in the last two Tests in Kolkata and Mumbai, skipper Darren Sammy called for more consistency from his side in the one-dayers commencing today. The tourists scored 463 in their second innings at Eden Gardens and 590 in the first innings at the Wankhede Stadium, with young Darren Bravo smashing centuries in both matches to announce his arrival on the big stage.

"As a team we are making some strides, but we still need more consistency," Sammy said. "We did some good things earlier this year against Pakistan and India at home and we beat Bangladesh there last month. "We came here and competed in the Tests against India, but did not capitalise on the key moments," felt Sammy
The good news for them is hard-hitting all-rounder Kieron Pollard is returning to the West Indies squad whereas batsman Jason Mohammed and off-spinner Sunil Narine are the new entrants.

"We have seen what he (Pollard) has done here in the IPL. Last time he played in the World Cup, he batted well. He has a lot of knowledge about Indian conditions and Indian players, having played here for three seasons. We have the belief that we will come out well and look to win matches. Both teams have equally capable players who can make an impact," Sammy stated.

The West Indies skipper felt India would miss a great finisher in Mahendra Singh Dhoni after he was rested for the ODI series. "There's no doubt that India will miss Dhoni... looking at the one-day series against England (both away and in India), Dhoni contributed a lot at his position. Basically, he finishes the game for India all the time," Sammy said.

"Sans Dhoni, somebody will have to play the role of a finisher for the hosts. But we will be looking at our squad and focus on what we have to do in order to beat India," he added. The remaining matches will be played in Visakhapatnam (December 2), Ahmedabad (December 5), Indore (December 8) and Chennai (December 11).
