India-West Indies third Test ends in thrilling draw after bowlers finally hold sway

MUMBAI: R Ashwin won't forget the Mumbai Test in a hurry. While he will always cherish the fact that he became only the third Indian cricketer to score a Test hundred and take five wickets in the same match, he will regret not charging back for the second run that would have given India a heart-stopping victory on Saturday.

Dhoni wants turning pitches from day one

Mahendra Singh Dhoni made a plea for having pitches that aid turn from the first day while terming the third Test as a ‘good game of cricket.'

“I want wickets that turn from the very first day because that sets a bit of panic within the opposition dressing room and of course at the same time you are under pressure to perform and that makes it interesting.

“I am hoping that we stick to our kind of wickets that turn from the first day so that the toss doesn't become very important,” Dhoni said.

We would have loved to win here: Sammy

West Indies may have lost the series 0-2, but the semblance of a fight they put up on the final day of the third Test that ended here on Saturday was praiseworthy. Captain Darren Sammy was eyeing a win to climb the Test rankings. "We would have loved a win here. Playing a higher rung team, we would have got some points.

Our goal is to make it to the top five in the rankings. I'm obviously happy with the result, but a win would have been the icing on the cake," he said at the post-match media briefing. Sammy felt atrocious batting in the first session on Saturday cost the visitors dearly. "For a win like that, we had to bat well in both innings. We didn't bat well in the second innings. Some of the shots we played were uncalled for.

You have to be prepared to bat for long," said Sammy, admitting his team has improved in leaps and bounds. "We have improved a lot. This was a good advertisement for five-day cricket and we kept believing that we could get a draw or a win," he said.

Till the start of Day Four there wasn't any indication of such a cliffhanger and the captain admitted it in as many words. "I didn't foresee this. We were hoping to get about 300-plus when we came to the ground this morning.

But after we lost seven-eight wickets, we had to go back to the dressing room and plan out the game. In the last few overs, all sorts of thoughts came to my mind. At one time, the thought of a tied Test also came up. I was speaking to Kirk (Edwards) at covers and he said 'we can draw, we won't lose'."

Sammy credited coach Ottis Gibson for the improvement. "For me, on a personal note, Gibson has been great for the side. We dominated the two Tests against Sri Lanka, did well against Pakistan and competed well against India. The players now have the belief that they can do well," he said.

Mumbai: Satisfied after snatching a thrilling draw in the third Test against India on Saturday, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy said a defeat in the final match of the series would have broken their hearts, especially after scoring a massive total in the first innings.

Batting-friendly wicket prepared for 1st ODI

hVDzR.jpg

CUTTACK: The track at the Barabati stadium, venue for the first one-dayer between India and the West Indies, will be tailor-made for batting with plenty of runs on offer, said curator Pankaj Patnaik.

Going by Patnaik's words, the sellout crowd is set to witness a high-scoring match.

"We have prepared a batting-friendly wicket and there will be plenty of runs for the batsmen. I am not ruling out a total of 300," Patnaik said.

"Bowlers will get good bounce and there will be little turn for spinners but we have to make sure the wickets offer lots of runs as it's a one-day match after all," he added.

That India chased down on the last two occasions - 243 vs Sri Lanka (December 21, 2009) and 273 vs England (November 26, 2008), suggest that the team batting second is likely to have an advantage.

"There will be dew factor in these parts. But we are taking all the precautions. We will use some chemical spray to keep dew at bay. We will use it before the match in two hours intervals so that it will negate the dew affect."

Virat Kohli: We didn't know about Yuvraj's tumour

Virat Kohli, who replaced Yuvraj Singh in the playing XI of the Mumbai Test against the West Indies, said yesterday that he was not aware of the dashing left-hander's tumour in his lung. "We didn't have an intimation about this thing that came up.

I was pretty surprised to know that this was the problem. I personally didn't know this was the problem. I was very surprised and I wish him a speedy recovery. He is such a dear member to the team," Kohli was quoted as saying by PTI.

Yuvraj was not picked for the Test section of the Australia tour because he told the Board that he hadn't recovered from an illness. A day later, his mother revealed to the media that a golf-ball size lump has been found over Yuvraj's left lung. The tumour is non-malignant.
