McGrath and Slater make their ODI debuts

On this day in 1993, Glenn McGrath and Michael Slater donned the ODI jerseys for the first time in the Benson & Hedges World Series match against South Africa. It was a good game for Slater as he blasted a quick-fire 73 off 69 balls. However, he was the only Australian to cross the half-century mark as the hosts were bowled out for 189 with Fannie de Villiers picking up a 3-wicket haul. In reply, South Africa got past the line with minimum fuss as Hansie Cronje scored an unbeaten 91 while skipper, Kepler Wessels contributed with a fine 70. Mcgrath kept things tight but did not have any wickets to speak for his efforts.

Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag remember 2011 World Cup ‘dream win’

On 2nd April 2011, India wrote history when the Indian skipper MS Dhoni swung his bat and smashed Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Kulasekara for a maximum at Wankhede Stadium to lift the World Cup after 28 years. This was the second instance after 1983 when India had won a cricket World Cup, the previous one came under the leadership of Kapil Dev.

1st June 2002

At the age of 32, and just 26 months after his dramatic fall from grace, Hansie Cronje died in a plane crash near George, a town in South Africa's Western Cape. Cronje, who captained South Africa in 53 matches - and would surely have done so in many more - and two World Cups, shook the cricket world to its foundations in April 2000, when he admitted taking money from a bookmaker to influence the results of matches, and invited ridicule by blaming Satanic influences for his deception. But at the time of his death, in South Africa at least, he was beginning to win back public support despite this notorious lack of repentance. Away from cricket, he had been rebuilding his life as a financial manager for a Johannesburg company. More than 2000 mourners attended his funeral.

Happy birthday Jayasuriya!

Sri Lanka’s batting legend Sanath Jayasuriya had a special liking for the Indian bowlers during his career spanning from 1989 to 2011.

He scored 938 runs in 10 Tests and 2,899 runs in 89 ODIs, scoring 3 and 7 hundreds in each of the formats against India.

With his hard-hitting style of batting, Jayasuriya decimated the Indian bowling attack on a number of occasions. He has recorded his highest Test (340) and ODI (189) score against India.

Today it's his 48th birthday!!
