Gavaskar's superb 221 at the Oval gets India tantalisingly close

Chasing 438 to win the fourth Test
against England at The Oval in 1979,
Indian came tantalisingly close to the
target. Sunil Gavaskar came up with a
superb knock. He scored 221 runs in
the second essay and was involved in a
brisk 159-run stand with Dilip
Vengsakar. However, the 'Little Master'
fell to Botham when India needed 49
more off 7.4 overs. 'Beefy' went on to
pick up the wickets of Yajurvindra
Singh and Yashpal Sharma while he
also effected the run out of
Venkataraghavan. This left India with
15 to win off the final over with Karsan
Ghavri and and Bharath Reddy at the
crease. The 9th wicket pair could only
manage 6 in the last over as India
ended up 9 short of the target with the
match finishing in a thrilling draw.
England ended up winning the series 1-0.

5th September 1973

Sobers falls for nought in his only ODI

West Indian legend and one of the
greatest all-rounders to have played
the game of cricket, Sir Garfield Sobers
amassed 8032 run in his Test career.
However, in his first ODI that he played
on this day in 1973 against England at
Leeds, Sobers fell for no score in what
turned out to be his only ODI for West
Indies. Batting at number 6, the left-
hander lasted only 6 deliveries, falling
to Chris Old. While he could not open
his runs tally in ODIs, he managed to
pick up a wicket and also take a catch
in the match that England won by 1 wicket.

Sachin Tendulkar hits his first ODI ton
..

After a long wait, India's Sachin
Tendulkar finally got his maiden ODI
hundred, in his 79th ODI. It was during
the Singer World Series match in
Colombo against Australia in 1994 that
Tendulkar scored the first of many to
come. Opening the batting for India,
the legend-in-the-making handled
the likes of Craig McDermott, Glenn
McGrath and Shane Warne with ease
to bring up a fine 110 off 130 balls to
help India to a total of 246/8. The
subcontinent team managed to bowl
out the team from Down Under for 215
to win the game by 31 runs. The
Mohammad Azharuddin led side went
on to win the tournament, defeating
hosts Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final.
