9th August 1992

Talented left-handed batsman David Gower's England career comes to a sad end in 1992

A talented left-handed batsman, who
was a treat to watch when in full flow,
David Gower's career came to a sad
end as the 5th Test against Pakistan,
which ended on August 9, 1992, turned
out to be his last. While he managed
only 27 and 1 in this Test, he had
scored 73 and 31* in the previous two
matches, despite which Gooch decided
to ignore him for the series against
India - a decision that seemed a
personal rather than a selection-based
one. Gower ended his career with 8231
runs in Tests, and England record
which was later broken by Gooch.

Today in 1990, Anil Kumble made his Test debut against England and picked 3 wickets in the 1st innings. :clap :clap :clap

11th August 2005

Wicket No. 600 for Shane Warne in the
Ashes Test at Old Trafford

Shane Warne's genius was never in
doubt, but to the very tiny few who
still held such doubts, the legendary
leg-spinner cleared things up
becoming the only bowler in the
history of Test cricket to amass 600
wickets to his name. This was achieved
in the Ashes series of 2005, with the
wicket of Marcus Trescothick.

Today in 2005, Shane Warne completed his 600 wickets in Tests. :luv :clap :clap

14th August 1990
1948 and 1990 - Farewell to Don
Bradman, arrival of Sachin Tendulkar

A special date in the history of cricket.
It saw the end of one era and the
beginning of another.
On this day in 1948, Don Bradman
ended his truly astonishing Test career
with a duck, narrowly missing out on
achieving a mind-boggling Test
average of over 100.

However, in 1990, cricket saw the
emergence of a vice-Bradman with
Sachin Tendulkar scoring his first ever
Test hundred - Against England in Old
Trafford.

16th August 1974

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, one with rare virtues of patience and determination was born

On this day in 1974, Shivnarine
Chanderpaul was born. The Guyanese
left-handed batsman known for his
crab-like stance and ingrained with
those rare virtues of patience and
determination has gone on to compile
more than 11,000 Test runs.
Chanderpaul made his Test debut
against England back in 1994 at
Georgetown. He gave a glimpse of his
burgeoning potential by scoring a fifty
in his first Test. Actually, it took him
more than three years to make his first
Test hundred which came against India
at Bridgetown, Barbados in 1997. A
floating bone in his feet was acting as
a hurdle. Since that back-to-the-wall
hundred against India though, he has
been an ultra-consistent performer for
the West Indies.

17th August 1976

Michael Holding breathed fire as he picked up 14 wickets in a match at The Oval

On this day in 1976, Michael Holding,
bowled a fierce spell to take 14 wickets
in the match against England at The
Oval. On a batting paradise, Holding
bounded to the crease like a turbo-
charged engine to send shivers down
the spine of the opposition ranks.
Holding just took the pitch out of the
equation by bowling at lightning quick
pace. Only Denis Amiss, the
Warwickshire opening partner was
able to withstand Holding bowling with
fire and brimstone.
