Gooch triple rocks India
  • prv_44494_1406531299.jpg
When Azharuddin won the toss and
opted to field, he wouldn't have
envisaged what would have happened
next. Famously dropped on 36 by Kiran
More, Gooch went on to clatter the
Indians all over the park over the next
five days. Resuming the day on 194, he
went on to make his personal best of
333 and the followed it up with a
cracking 123 in the second dig. There
was more entertainment in a match
full of runs. Ravi Shastri and
Mohammad Azharuddin made sublime
hundreds in India's first innings and
Kapil Dev helped India avert follow-on
with four consecutive sixes off Eddie
Hemmings. England eventually won
the Test by 247 runs.

Also on this day, Sir Donald Bradman
scored his 29th and last Test century.

Sir Garfield Sobers was born today

Perhaps the greatest ever all-round to
grace the game - West Indian legend
Gary Sobers was born today. The all-
rounder ended with a massive 8032
Test runs and 235 wickets to his name,
and was knighted shortly after.

29th July 2006

Mahela-Sanga make merry

12 wickets had fallen for 183 runs
before Mahela Jayawardene joined
Kumar Sangakkara in the middle. Over
the next 942 deliveries, South Africa
were left chasing leather. The
previous record, 576 between Sanath
Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama, at
the R Premadasa stadium was sent
into oblivion. Jayawardene made 374,
the highest score by a Sri Lankan
batsman. Sangakkara made 287, and
by the time he was finally dismissed,
the pair had realised 638 runs for the
third wicket. Needless to say, Sri Lanka
romped home on the final afternoon.

Cork becomes first Englishman to take a hat-trick since 1957

On this day, 19 years ago, Domin Cork
became the first England bowler ever
to take a Test hat-trick since 1957. The
right-arm pacer blew away the West
Indies top-order with a relentless spell,
which included the wickets of Richie
Richardson, Junior Murray, and Carl
Hooper in 3 consecutive deliveries.

2nd August 2003
Smith toys with England attack

The England bowlers received quite a
hammering at the hands of a young
Graeme Smith, who led from the front
to blast a superb 259 to power South
Africa to a commanding 682/6 declared
at Lord's. The hosts, who were bowled
out for just 173 in the first innings,
fought hard but could not prevent
South Africa from winning the 2nd
Test of the 2003 series by an innings
and 92 runs.

Today in 2001, Virender Sehwag scored his maiden ODI century against New Zealand :clap :clap

3rd August 2000

100th Test for two English greats

The 3rd Test between England and
West Indies, which started on the 3rd
of August, 2000, was the 100th Test
for Michael Atherton and Alec,
Stewart. The first day was curtailed by
rain while on Day 2, Stewart scored a
fine hundred, becoming only the
fourth batsman to score a ton in his
100th Test. Atherton though did not
have as memorable a Test as he
colleague did, as the opening batsmen
fell cheaply in both the innings in the
Test that ended in a draw.

4th August 2001

Record 7th Ashes win in a row for
Australia as they beat England by 7 wickets

The Australians made it a record 7th
Ashes series win in a row when they
managed to secure a 7-wicket win at
Trent Bridge to win the third Test of
the 2001 series. After Glenn McGrath
did the damage in the first innings,
Shane Warne came up with a magical
performance in the second, leaving the
tourists with a target of 158. It turned
out to be a slightly tricky chase as
Australia lost three wickets in quick
succession while Steve Waugh had to
retire hurt, and the visitors were
effectively four down with the score at
89. However, a calm Mark Waugh, aided
by Damien Martyn, helped Australia
through.

5th August 1966

Sir Garfield Sobers' all-round domination over England in the Test series in 1966

In a series that West Indies dominated,
Garry Sobers, who was also having an
excellent series of his own with both
the bat and the ball, blasted a hundred
between lunch and tea on Day 2 and
followed it up with a five-wicket haul
to help the Caribbean side to a series-
clinching win at Leeds. Sobers ended
the series with 722 runs at an average
of 103.14, including 3 hundreds and 2
fifties while he also picked up 20
wickets in the series at an average of
27.25.
