Kumble picks up 600th
..

Not often do you see an Indian bowler
picking up 600 Test wickets. In fact, it
has happened only once and the
person to do is Anil Kumble. The leg-
spinner, who finished his career with
an amazing 619 wickets, picked up his
600th during the Perth Test against
Australia in 2008. Andrew Symonds
was his 599th victim as well as his
600th. To make the occasion even
more memorable, India went on to win
the game by 72 runs. The match itself
was significant as it happened in the
aftermath of 'Monkey-Gate'. After the
controversial Sydney Test, Anil
Kumble had mentioned that "only one
team played in the spirit of the game"
and it was fitting to see the Indian
skipper achieve a memorable
milestone in the back-drop of all the
that was happening outside the game.

Kapil, Gavaskar end India's win
drought
..
While they emerged victorious in their
first ever Test series against Pakistan,
it was a long wait for India before their
clinched their second series win
against their arch-rivals. After 27
years, India managed to end the
drought, thanks to the efforts of Sunil
Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. Having taken
a 1-0 lead in the six-match series, India
headed into the fifth Test in Madras
hoping to take an unassailable lead.
They started well by restricting
Pakistan to 272 in the first innings,
with Kapil Dev taking a four-wicket
haul. India then posted a total of 430
with Gavaskar scoring a fine 166 while
Kapil managed a useful 84. Kapil's
superb run in the Test continued as he
picked up 7/56 in the second innings,
finishing with match figures of 11/146
to bowl out the visitors for 233. After
that, Gavaskar and chetan sharma help to reach target 76 and clinch historic win ..

Chandrasekhar makes his Test debut
..

Long before Anil Kumble, there was
this man who could wrinkle out the
best of the batsmen with his magic.
Born on May 17, 1945 in Mysore,
Chandra as he was popularly known,
overcame a childhood polio attack
which withered his right wrists to
emerge as one of the greatest ever
match-winner for India. Bhagwath
Subramanya Chandrasekhar made his
Test debut on this day in 1964 in the
second Test against England at
Bombay. Although the match ended in
a draw, Chandra started his Test career
on a good note, picking up 4/67 in the
first innings. He went on to become
one of the biggest match-winners for
India abroad as snaffled 42 wickets in
the 5 overseas winning Tests that he
was a part of. After a career spanning
for 15 years, Chandra finished with 242
Test wickets at an average of 29.74 ..

Lamb scores 18 runs off last over ..

Allan Lamb was well-known for his
ability to script memorable victories for
his country in the shorter format of
the game. On January 22, 1987, in the
Benson and Hedges tri-series, he
clobbered Bruce Reid for 18 runs in the
last over of the match to take England
to a famous win against arch-rivals,
Australia.
He smashed 2, 4, 6, 2 and 4 and
England didn't even need the entire
over to win the epic encounter. A few
months later, he did something similar
while playing against the West Indies
in a World Cup encounter. He clobbered
Courtney Walsh all over the park to
help England emerge victorious ..

Zimbabwe script memorable win ..

On January 23, 2001, the once mighty
West Indies crashed to an ignominious
defeat against Zimbabwe in Sydney in
the tri-series held in Australia.
On a deck that helped the seamers,
Cameron Cuffy took four wickets to
bowl out Zimbabwe for just 138.
However, Heath Streak then ripped
through the West Indies' batting line-
up by taking wickets upfront. Bryan
Strang, the left-arm swing bowler,
gave him good support by snaring the
key wicket of Brian Lara.
Just when Jimmy Adams and Nixon
McLean looked set to take the Windies
to a victory, Mluleki Nkala followed up
the efforts of Streak and Strang by
taking quick wickets to help Zimbabwe
script a memorable win.

Mark Waugh scores ton on Test debut
..
On January 25, 1991, Mark Waugh,
known for his elegant splendour at the
crease, made his Test debut against
old foes, England in Adelaide.
Mark Waugh showed his class in his
first Test itself by essaying a majestic
ton that included some sumptuous
shots on the on side. The English
bowlers didn't help their cause by
bowling on his pads.
Interestingly, Steve Waugh, his twin
brother, had made his Test debut back
in 1986. However, Mark Waugh had to
wait for his chance. He was selected
only after he amassed 7,501 runs in
First-Class cricket for New South Wales
and Essex ..

Birth of Daniel Vettori

New Zealand's greatest left-arm
spinner, Daniel Vettori, was born on
January 27, 1979. He made his Test
debut at the age of 18 years and 10
days against England in 1997 in
Wellington and Nasser Hussain turned
out to be his first Test wicket.
Since then, he has played 113 Tests
and 284 ODIs. With 362 Test wickets to
his name, he is New Zealand's second
highest wicket-taker. He is also the
most capped player and the highest
wicket-taker for his country in the
shorter format of the game.
The bespectacled Vettori captained
New Zealand from 2007 to 2011. With
4,531 runs to his name, Vettori has
also been a useful batsman down the

England suffer embarrassing defeat

On January 28, 2012, England were
bowled out for a paltry score of 72,
while chasing down a target of 145 in
the second Test played against
Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.
On a track that assisted the spinners,
England's batsmen didn't help their
cause by looking to defend all the
time. Only Andrew Strauss played with
guts and gumption to score 32. For
Pakistan, Saeed Ajmal and Abdur
Rehman shared nine wickets between
them in the second innings. The hosts
eventually thrashed the-then No 1
ranked side England 3-0 in the series
by winning the final Test played in
Dubai
