Microsoft on Friday evening formally
announced that it would no longer use brand
Nokia for its smartphones. Instead the devices
will be called Microsoft Lumia.
On the official Nokia Conversations Blog, Tuula
Rytila, senior vice president of marketing for
phones at Microsoft, announced the change.
"Our global and local websites are going
through a transition as we speak and in the
coming days our social channels will get a
new name too - they will be called Microsoft
Lumia. We would like to invite our Lumia fans
to continue to follow us and always be up to
speed with the latest device news on
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram," she said.
But at the same time, Microsoft will continue
to use Nokia name for its entry-level phones.
"Microsoft will continue to sell Nokia-branded,
entry-level category of phones, such as the
Nokia 130. We have licensed the Nokia brand
for such devices," said Tuula.
She also said that the existing Nokia Lumia
phones would continue to be sold in the
market with the same branding. But all future
Lumia phones, and one is coming very soon
according to Tuula, will sport Microsoft tag
instead of Nokia name.
The change was also announced on
Microsoft's Facebook page in France a few
days ago .
