RailTel, the telecom arm of Indian Railways, is planning to expand it high-speed broadband services in rural and urban Jharkhand soon.
As the joint-venture initiative with Google to ensure free Wi-Fi connectivity at Ranchi railway station awaits formal inauguration, the company is planning an aggressive marketing campaign to target domestic and commercial users.
Under the brand Railwire, the company expects to provide 'last mile connectivity' in Jharkhand using optical fibre cable (OFC), coaxial cable and Wimax technologies at affordable prices with connectivity speeds of up to 100 GB per second.
"We have started testing connectivity with the help of local last mile connectivity providers after the formal launch last year. An aggressive marketing campaign will be launched in the next few months," K Lakra, RailTel general manager (operations) for eastern India said in Ranchi on Monday. RailTel announced its plan on the day Reliance Jio Limited announced the launch of its 8100-km cable system called 'Bay of Bengal Gateway' (BBG) in Mumbai.
BBG will connect South East Asia and Middle East through an undersea cable system.
The PSU aims to gain an upper hand among competitors (including BSNL) by launching the services on prepaid tariffs. It will be banking mostly on its OFC infrastructure in the state. RailTel has close to 41,000 km of OFC across India, which is waiting to be used.
The PSU on Monday said it has floated tenders for the procurement of equipment for setting up free Wi-Fi hotspots in Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad railway stations. Under the directive of the railway ministry, RailTel will provide free internet connectivity to 100 stations by the end of the year.
