Opera is integrating ad blocking into its desktop and mobile browsers, starting withOpera Mini for Android.

Opera Mini is designed for the constraints of mobile devices and slow or metered internet connections. The browser integrates data compression technology, which allows it to serve web content faster and over less bandwidth compared to classic mobile browsers like Chrome or Opera for Android.

Thanks to the addition of ad blocking, Opera Mini for Android can now load pages even faster. Opera claims that turning the ad blocking mode on speeds up load times by 40%. In addition, because ads and other forms of web overhead are stripped out, users can save up on their data bills as well.

While other browsers require plug-ins (or root access) for ad blocking, Opera Mini includes the feature out of the box, though users will have to opt in on the first run.

The same feature is coming to Opera for desktop. No details have been provided on the eventual availability of the feature on Opera’s “regular” Android browser.

Opera Mini joins Samsung’s stock Internet browser in offering support for ad blocking. But Samsung’s app merely exposes an ad blocking API, and users need to install a separate plug-in, like Adblock Fast – this specific plug-in was pulled by Google from the Play Store in February, before being reinstated a week later.

The problem of ad blocking is thorny – on the one hand, users are rightfully put off by the barrage of ads they see online every day. On the other, content creators need to sell ad space in order to stay in business and continue to offer free content to users.

Returning to Opera, the Norwegian companyreceived a buyout offer from a group of Chinese investors including Qihoo 360, maker of the popular 360 Security app for Android. As for now, it doesn’t seem that the acquisition went through and Opera continues to enhance the products it’s known for, including Opera Mini and the standalone data compression service Opera Max.

Opera and all of its entities have always been red. That's part the company's logo and visual identity, so it's quite interesting that the latest update to Opera Mini's beta app has added colored themes, allowing you to change the tone and look of the app to suit your preference.

The theme pop-up will show the first time you launch the app, but it can also be found under Settings > Theme. Six colors are available to choose from, including Opera's famous red as well as green, blue, purple, grey-blue, and black. All colors are very Material Design-inspired or friendly if you will, being bold but not excessively so.

Once chosen, the theme color overtakes many elements inside the app, including the title bar and notification bar, the data savings section, the tab switcher, and various menu and tab headers.

Whether this means that Opera's new owners are ready to break with Opera's identity or that the team just wants to give its users more choice remains to be seen. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Norwegian software company Opera Software ASA today said it has launched a faster version of its Opera Mini browser which also supports 13 Indian languages. The new version comes with built-in ad-block setting which enables the browser to provide up to 72 percent faster web surfing, the company’s Director of International Product Marketing Kiran Dhillon told reporters here.

The ad-block feature blocks unwanted advertisements that pop up when a browser is opened, thereby consuming less internet data and making browsing faster, she claimed. “Ad-block can enhance mobile performance and make browsing faster. This new, faster version of ‘Opera Mini’ also comes with new updates such as support for 13 Indian languages, as we feel the next billion users will come from non-English background… it is specifically for Indian market where Internet speed is much slower than global average,” Dhillon said.

Opera also uses “compression technology” to enhance browsing speed by compressing a web page to 10 per cent of its size, Dhillon said. “We have a separate server called ‘Thor’ which is based in Iceland where the web page is compressed without any data loss,” she said. Dhillon said with only 10 percent in India using English as a preferred language, Opera has been made available in 13 languages.

The web browser, with 350 million users world-wide, has nearly 50 million users in India, making it an important market for the company, she said. The company is betting big on India where nearly 84 percent use mobile phones to access Internet, Dhillon added.

Opera has updated the Opera Mini browser for Android with new features and integrations. This includes India-specific updates on Bollywood and cricket on its home page, alongside the ability to download videos on to the smartphone from the browser.

The new Opera Mini version for Android will show a new entertainment feed on its home page. The browser company has partnered up with Bollywood Hungama for this purpose. It has also partnered with Sportskeeda to give live cricket updates on its home page as well.

Opera Mini also enabled a new video download feature, which will essentially allow users to download videos onto their devices from the browser directly. By clicking on the video, a pop-up dialogue box with the option to save the video appears. Users can then hit on the Save button to start downloading the video, or press cancel to just stream it online. This feature has been enabled on many websites like VuClip, Hotstar, Times of India, DjPunjab, Indiamp3, Webmusic, and Djmaza.

Opera notes that the feature only works on video websites without their own integrated media player. Video downloading is essentially useful for users who look to loop videos for whatever reasons, without wasting data. The downloaded videos can be saved onto inbuilt storage or to a microSD card installed in the user's device.

Opera Mini recently also introduced a new feature called 'Video Boost' for its Android users. As the name suggests, the feature would help Opera Mini users "see less of the video-buffering wheel."
