This isn't changing anytime soon. IDK what's wrong with Sony all of a sudden. When they didn't have Ten channels they were really crazy about football and even got preseason friendly rights 2-3 years back and now when they have so many channels they don't care about it anymore. Sony had FA cup rights few years back when they didn't have sports channels (before Sony Six) yet they were punctual and broadcasted as many matches they could on Pix. You'd think they changed after all these years but even in 2019 football fans in India don't have assurance of their club matches being broadcasted. Shame!
Hyper competition and rise of number of channels has a role to play in this. Rights r costly, ad revenues have split across variety of chs across genres. This is why during 90's or early 2000's we got much better content access for major + important niche events. Even rating system has added to this problem, everything depends on it.
Till Indian Consumer changes mindset and is ready to pay appropriately for required content, things will remain same. Don't know why people hesitate in spending for content, we don't save money by this as money brands spend on ads comes from us itself and included in price of products. It is much better if one pays for content and gets other things from market at reduced prices bcoz of lesser ad spends needed. Ads need to be minor contributors to broadcaster revenue than depending mostly on it
This is specially needed for genres like Sports, News or even movies. GEC, Kids, Music can continue to be ad dependent. Look at what we r being served on hindi or regional news channels - useless debates, viral videos, Kim Jong Un, entertainment clips/news, jungle news and other weird stuff. They just take out videos from net and have special shows on it, i feel disturbed with this situation
I feel Sony ruined their own channels and competition by acquiring Ten. Logo is bad. Content curation is bad. They don't promote sporting events properly. Instead of promoting X Games, Impact Wrestling, UFC. They are promoting Olympics which will come next year. Same is with cricket promotion. They are doing it 6 months prior to actual events.
Infact i find Sony managing thing pretty well. They r showing so many live sports and even ones like XGames, Red Bull Race, Archery World Cup, Snooker etc. which hardly have viewers here. But i agree they r not good in promoting or packaging things
