The International Cricket Council (ICC) has deferred a decision on the advancement of the next T20 WC. After the roaring success of the 2016 edition of the event in India, there were widespread calls to reinstate the tournament as a biennial event.

According to the ICC itinerary, the T20 WC was next scheduled to be played in Australia in 2020. However, South Africa had emerged as a prospective host for a 2018 edition, the confirmation of which was expected during the recently-concluded annual conference in Edinburgh.

Dave Richardson, ICC's chief executive, confirmed that the matter had come up for discussion and that the council sought views from Star, the wholly owned subsidiary of 21st Century Fox Inc. that holds broadcast rights for ICC world events until 2023, before coming up with a final decision.

"It came up for discussion. In principle, the board supported the possibility of at least holding an additional T20 WC in 2018," Richardson said after the conference. "There is a gap in the Future Tours Programme calendar for it to take place. But again it depends whether it is worth it or not - we have got a broadcast agreement in place with Star. They need to be consulted. Their views need to be sought.

"We need to negotiate a value for that tournament. We would have loved to have made a decision this time, but we are not ready yet. We need to work through the details with Star and then make a decision in October."
