When it comes to very high-resolution video, researchers concluded that a new video compression technology is a big step up from today's prevailing H.264 standard.
Television resolution is constantly improving – and this must go hand-in-hand with transmitting the data more efficiently. Reputable manufacturers of televisions, computers and mobile telephones, working jointly with Fraunhofer researchers, are developing a new standard for data transmission: “High Efficiency Video Coding”, or HEVC for short. Also known as H.265, H.NGVC, and MPEG-H Part 2.This video codec will be unveiled in Amsterdam at the IBC trade show, from September 7 - 11, 2012 (Hall 8, Booth B80).
Twice as efficient as H.264 and can support resolutions up to 7680 × 4320,meaning that it can match its image quality using only half as many bits per second. That's a potential boon for the industry, which is struggling to improve image quality and meet video-streaming demand without taxing bandwidth too much.

Vanguard Software Solutions Demonstrates Real-Time HEVC (H.265) Software Encoder at IBC2012
Based on the updated HM-8.0 HEVC reference code, the VSS encoder is optimized for real-time performance on PC platforms, with built-in cloud scalability, while demonstrating improvements in quality and bitrate for video distribution and communication markets over current implementations based on H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. HEVC encodes video at lower bitrates than H.264/MPEG-4 AVC while maintaining similar quality levels.

Vidyo Announces Higher Quality HD Video Conferencing at Significantly Lower Price Point

The industry’s first scalable HEVC (H.265) codec for video conferencing – Vidyo will demonstrate its next generation scalable HEVC codec design that will show the benefits of HEVC, requiring half the bit rate of H.264 SVC to achieve the same or better quality at 1080p60. This translates to lower bandwidth costs and the ability to have higher quality video conferences over narrow bandwidth networks.

RE: New HEVC video compression wins big over today's standard

Now H.264 is the main standard used for video compression, and most devices that can support video playback feature an SoCs capable of H.264 hardware video decoding. Since 2004, however, work has been done to improve H.264, and a new standard called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also referred to as H.265, will eventually replace H.264, even though this will take a few more years to really gain traction.

HEVC will be able to double the data compression ratio compared to H.264 with the same quality, or improve the quality using the same bitrate, and it can support 8K UHD (Ultra High Definition) with a resolution of 7680×4320 (4320p). This new video codec is a big deal for those who pay for video bandwidth (80% of internet traffic according to Ericsson), and it should also be welcomed by consumers, as it will magically double their storage device capacity, and they may say farewell to buffering messages while watching online videos. I still have to watch YouTube videos @ 360p to get a reasonable experience here…

RE: New HEVC video compression wins big over today's standard

You are doing good job dear friend jayanji and very nice info. on HEVC video compression,So this process of CODEC = CO + DEC is Improving day by day and I also love to Encode any Video info. CO mean Compression and here DEC mean again the Compress data is being Decoded that is without compression.Waiting for such a nice tool which can be used to compress in this latest HEVC Compression, If you have any link pl do post here. Thanks a lot bro. for nice info.
