August 20 was the last date for paying taxes and filing GST returns for the month of July.
With several firms reporting technical glitches on the Goods and Services Tax return filing website on Saturday ahead of the impending Sunday deadline, the government has extended the last date for filing the first tax returns under the GST regime to August 25.

August 20 was the last date for paying taxes and filing GST returns for the month of July — the maiden month of the new indirect tax regime.

However, several registered taxpayers were unable to file those returns on Saturday on the GST.gov.in website, which by evening admitted technical glitches in the process. “We are experiencing slowness and are working to improve the response. Please bear with us,” a scroll on the website announced.

On Saturday afternoon, the GST Network’s tech support twitter handle also had informed users, in response to a spate of queries: “The GST portal is experiencing some issues, kindly try after sometime.”

GST driving customers away? TN restaurateurs claim 35pc losses under new tax regime.

Prices have risen rapidly, as the taxes have soared from 2% under the previous VAT regime to 12% to 18% under GST.

In Tamil Nadu, the GST regime is proving to be a continuing source of heartburn for restaurant owners and customers alike. With prices rising steeply under the new tax regime, customer footfalls have dropped drastically, and restaurants have faced losses of more than 35% in the month since GST was inaugurated, claim restaurateurs.

In the new GST regime, small restaurants with an annual turnover of less than Rs 50 lakh are taxed at a rate of 5%, non-air-conditioned restaurants pay a tax of 12%, and air-conditioned restaurants pay a tax of 18%.

According to M Ravi, the President of the Tamil Nadu Hotels Association, this represents a steep rise in tax rates from the earlier VAT regime. “Earlier there was a VAT of only 2% (for non-AC restaurants), but now the public has to pay 12% or 18% as GST.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday told tax officers to work on a system to ensure that small traders are brought into the GST network, especially those with an annual turnover of less than Rs 20 lakh.

Addressing central and state tax officers on the first day of the 2-day Rajasva Gyan Sangam in New Delhi, he also asked tax officials to be friendly to honest taxpayers as part of his efforts to end the fear of the taxman and make India a more tax compliant society.

Modi said that the new tax regime has ushered in more transparency while integrating the country into a unified marketplace. Though more than 18 lakh traders have been brought under the new indirect tax regime, the Prime Minister felt that the success of GST will be realised when all traders are brought into its net. He asked tax officers to work on a system so that smaller traders who are not in the indirect tax paying bracket also register in the GST network.
