Google Play hits 25 billion downloads

Whether you’re looking for directions, checking email or sharing a picture with friends, apps are now an indispensable part of life. And if you’re using Android, it all starts with Google Play, home to 675,000 apps and games. That’s a lot of choice. We’ve now crossed 25 billion downloads from Google Play, and to celebrate we’re offering some great discounts for the next five days.

Every day you’ll be able to choose from a collection of apps from some of the world’s top developers including Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, runtastic, Full Fat and more. And all for just 25 cents. We’ll also be offering some special collections like 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and our 25 top selling magazines, all at special prices. Visit Google Play a little later today to check them out.

Twenty-five billion is more than twice the distance, in miles, that the Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled since its launch 35 years ago. It’s the amount of time, in minutes, that have passed since some of our earliest ancestors began to set foot in Europe. And now, thanks to all of you, it’s a Google Play milestone. We look forward to the next 25 billion.

Google Play now allows free trial on apps subscriptions.

Free Trial Period

For any subscription, you can set up a free trial period that lets users try your subscription content before buying it. The trial period runs for the period of time that you set and then automatically converts to a full subscription managed according to the subscription's billing interval and price.

To take advantage of a free trial, a user must "purchase" the full subscription through the standard In-app Billing flow, providing a valid form of payment to use for billing and completing the normal purchase transaction. However, the user is not charged any money, since the initial period corresponds to the free trial. Instead, Google Play records a transaction of $0.00 and the subscription is marked as purchased for the duration of the trial period or until cancellation. When the transaction is complete, Google Play notifies users by email that they have purchased a subscription that includes a free trial period and that the initial charge was $0.00.

When the trial period ends, Google Play automatically initiates billing against the credit card that the user provided during the initial purchase, at the amount set for the full subscription, and continuing at the subscription interval. If necessary, the user can cancel the subscription at any time during the trial period. In this case, Google Play marks the subscription as expired immediately, rather than waiting until the end of the trial period. The user has not paid for the trial period and so is not entitled to continued access after cancellation.

You can set up a trial period for a subscription in the Developer Console, without needing to modify or update your APK. Just locate and edit the subscription in your product list, set a valid number of days for the trial (must be 7 days or longer), and publish. You can change the period any time, although note that Google Play does not apply the change to users who have already "purchased" a trial period for the subscription. Only new subscription purchases will use the updated trial period. You can create one free trial period per subscription product.

Download: Latest Google Play Store 3.9.16 - Remove Entries From All Apps, Keep Track Of Position In Lists, Expandable Notifications, And More

Google just started rolling out an updated Google Play Store version 3.9.16 that follows the previous version 3.8.17 from August. Good news, everyone - we've already got our hands on the APK for you to install manually thanks to our loyal tipsters.
What's New
The most notable and immediately apparent new feature is the long overdue ability to remove apps you've previously downloaded from the All Apps list. If you like to try a lot of apps, that list is likely very cluttered. With the new Google Play, you can trim it to your heart's content.
Update #1: You can multi-select by long-pressing any app in the list and then tapping more apps, then delete them all in one go (added 2 new screenshots demonstrating it).
Update #2: The new Play Store now keeps track of your location in lists, including My Apps and All Apps, so when you click into an app and back, it drops you into the same spot. I had variable luck with this, and it didn't seem to work in All Apps at first, but I just reproduced it on both the EVO LTE and the Nexus 7. Brilliant.
Update #3: The notification icon that shows up when you have app updates has changed, and notifications are now expandable. I've added more screenshots showing the differences.
Update #4: The notification icon after installing an app now shows the app icon instead of something generic.
The size of the Play Store APK actually went down, so Google must have trimmed some extra fat. We're still digging through everything - in the meantime, check out the screenshots and grab the new version from our mirrors.

Google brings Wishlists to Google Play Store

wishlists-google.png

As leaked earlier, Wishlists have reached the Google Play Store. We just noticed the feature on our Galaxy Nexus and it seems to be a part of already available Google Play v 3.9.16. So, there is no need to download any update to Google Play client app, it will simple appear on your phone as Google enables it for your account.

A new Add to Wishlist icon now also appears near the app or any other content title and you can use that to add that particular app to your Wishlist.

You can track you Wishlist by going to menu>>My Wishlist.

Google has been silently bringing many feature to Google Play in the last few months and we hope to see more in Android 4.2, which is set to launch on October 29, as per the invite sent out by Google earlier today.

Here are some screenshots showing the Wishlists feature:

Google Play Store reaches 700,000 apps landmark

Google's Play Store has achieved yet another milestone. The search giant claims that its store is now offering over 700,000 apps.

It's noteworthy that, based on the last set of numbers officially shared, Apple too is currently offering the same number of apps via its App Store.

Though reaching the milestone of 700,000 applications is big achievement for any operating system, some people are not taking this numbers wars seriously. With no approval process for apps before they make their way on to the Play Store, one tends to find a lot of half-baked apps, and others that are just wrappers around the mobile version of some websites. Contrast this to the App Store where at least some level of check is done before an app is approved, and, thus, the quality of the apps tends to be higher.

With the number of apps now equal, how about app downloads? In September, Google had announced over 25 billion downloads via its Play Store. On the other hand, Apple announced at the iPad Mini event last week that so far 35 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store.

In a bid to further increase Android adoption, Google on Monday introduced its Nexus 4 smartphone that is being manufactured by LG Electronics. It runs on the latest version of Android version 4.2 and comes with a 4.7-inch screen. Apart from this smartphone, Google also marked its presence in the 10-inch tablet market with the launch of Nexus 10. This tablet has a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels and will be available for $399.

Google Play customers can now pay for purchases using carrier billing on Verizon

Users of Android on the Verizon network will now have the ability to bill their Verizon Wireless account, instead of using a credit card or other form of payment. This change should help users purchase more apps easily, and is especially important for those users who do not have another form of payment, such as a credit card.

Users will be able to charge up to $25 of apps and other Google Play "merchandise" to their wireless bill every month and then they only have to pay through one channel. This latest addition brings the feature to Verizon, a feature that Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T have had for a while now. Just be sure to keep track of how much you're spending.

If you'd like, it appears to be something you can disable by going to Verizon's site and enabling "Block Web Purchases."
