Google Play replaces Android Market

Google renames its existing Android Market to Google Play

Google on Tuesday brought in a few sweeping changes to the way it distributes content on its Android platform, which powers millions of smartphones in the world. It replaced several Google services, including Android Market, with Google Play, a virtual store that will not only offer apps to smartphone users but also ebooks, videos and music.

Introducing the new virtual store, Jamie Rosenberg, director of digital content, at Google wrote that the Play is "entirely cloud-based so all your music, movies, books and apps are stored online, always available to you, and you never have to worry about losing them or moving them again".

"On your Android phone or tablet, we'll be upgrading the Android Market app to the Google Play over the coming days. Your videos, books and music apps (in countries where they are available) will also be upgraded to Google Play Movies, Google Play Books and Google Play Music apps," wrote Rosenberg. In India, videos, books and music is not available through Google store at the moment.

Rosenberg added that to celebrate Play, "Google will be offering a different album, book, video rental and Android app at a special price each day for the next week in 7 Days to Play sale." In India, only the apps will be available for the special price of around 49 cents (Rs 24.27).

Some of the popular apps that were part of the special sale on the first included SwiftKey X, World of Goo, Shadowgun, Dead Space, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Business Calendar.

Google's decision to unify all its content offerings in place is the company's attempt to take on Apple's iTunes and Amazon. Over the years, Apple has made iTunes a cornerstone of its market strategy and uses it to serve content on iPhone, iPad and Mac conputers. Amazon, meanwhile, is using its digital store to sell content to consumers directly as well as through its Fire tablet.

Google, which is planning to introduce its own tablet this year, is hoping that by unifying the content in one place, it will be able to serve and retain its customers more successfully.

Android Market and more unified as the Google Play store

artImg198x166_8924.jpg

Google is taking a leaf out of Apple’s and Amazon’s book and unifying its digital content under one roof for Android devices.

Called the Google Play Store instead of the Android Market, the store will bring Google Music, Movies and the Google Books in addition to the existing library of apps.

Users will be able to manage their content with greater ease and an app downloaded on one Google powered device will reflect on your other Google powered devices thanks to the power of the cloud (sounds like iCloud?).

Users will be able to store 20,000 music files on the cloud. You can store both the files you purchased from the Google Play Store and your own collection. You cannot store movies though.

The expansion of the library will help Android device users find a larger variety of content in one place making it a one stop shop for apps, books, music and movies.

Since the service is new, Google will offer special deals to attract customers to explore the new offerings.

Google says that there are more than 300 million Android devices active worldwide with 6 million activations happening each week. The marketplace has over 45,000 mobile apps and Google plans to add 4 million books including free titles and over 13 million songs and movies to the Google Play Store.

Google is venturing into territory currently dominated by Apple whose App Store has over 50,000 apps. Apple recently reached a milestone with over 25 billion apps downloaded. Google is currently at half that mark with 13 billion app downloads.

Android users can log on the marketplace (from now on known as the Google Play Store) and see the reflected changes or log on to https://play.google.com/store.

Google adds Google Play into navigation bar

artImg198x166_9117.jpg

Google has added its digital store Google Play, previously known as Android Market, to its black navigation bar on its home page. Prominently sandwiched between Maps and YouTube, Google Play now gets more visibility as Google adds a red “New” tag alongside.

Google Play, the rebranded version of Android Market plus Google Music and Google eBookstore, was launched earlier this month. The new digital store is said to be a unified source for all sorts of digital content such as apps, movies, books and others. This is all part of CEO Larry Page's reported goal of a "single unified, 'beautiful' product across everything."

Google Play is considered to be Google's response, or alternative approach, to Apple's iTunes. Google Play features more than 450,000 apps, millions of songs and books, and thousands of movies; and with its cross-platform approach and cloud-based storage users are allowed to access the content from anywhere.

It's not the first time Google has incorporated its new offering into black navigation bar. Previously, the bar has featured Google's social networking site Google+. Appearance on the navigation bar gives the new offering more visibility and ensures they do not escape users' attention. Check out the new addition in the image below:

Google Play web updated

web_store.jpg

In addition to all the other goodies Google rolled out thus far at Google IO 2012 they updated the online version of the Google Play Store with some pretty awesome features. So awesome in fact, that I'm rather perplexed as to why it was never mentioned. As you can see in the screenshot, you can uninstall and even update apps all from the site itself. Plus, any devices associated to your account will now also show an image representing that phone, tablet or Google TV. Sadly, you still can't get rid of apps you no longer use from the listing but we're getting to that point with the latest additions.

Google Maps offline for Android with Compass Mode for Street View

Now, you can download the latest version of the app in Google Play, then select and save a region of a map from more than 150 countries for use offline. Whether travelling internationally, carrying a WiFi-only device, heading underground on the subway or restricting your mobile data usage, you can now save up to six large metro areas (e.g., Greater London, Paris, or New York City and surrounding area) and use Google Maps for Android to find your way.

Let’s say you find yourself traveling to London this summer. Before you head off on your trip, simply find the area that you’ll be visiting. Then select “Make available offline” from the menu and verify the area that you would like to save.

Below the map, you’ll see we estimate the file size for you, so you know how much space it will take on your device. Once you confirm your selection the map will immediately start downloading.

If you have GPS enabled on the device, the blue dot will still work without a data connection so you know where you are, and if your device has a compass you can orient yourself without 3G or WiFi connectivity.

So whether you’re traveling internationally or underground, we hope offline maps will help you get around.

Today we’re also releasing a smoother and faster Compass Mode for Street View within Google Maps for Android. It’s the next best thing to being there, because your device becomes a window into a 360-degree, panoramic view of the outdoor or interior location through Business Photos. To experience the improved qualities of this feature you need a device with Google Maps for Android, Android 3.0 or higher and a gyroscope sensor plus version 1.8.1 of Street View on Google Maps.
