Google Drive - News & Updates

Google Drive for Mac and PC will now allow users to choose specific subfolders to sync locally. In addition, Google Drive for Android has also received an update which includes a slight tweak to the upload interface.

Google Drive product manager Aakash Sahney wrote in a blog post , “Drive can store terabytes (upon terabytes) but there’s a good chance your computer’s hard drive will run out of space if you sync everything. Fortunately, you can now select which folders or subfolders you want to sync — and deselect the ones you don’t.”

When a user deselects a folder, it will be removed from the computer, but still kept in Drive. Google Drive will also show the size of each folder, so one will know how much space to free up, time to time. After the files have been synced, Drive will allow users to move and delete items directly from the computer. Sahney added, “but doing that with shared files can cause others to lose access. Now, Drive warns you when this might happen.”

Recently, Google had also updated Drive for iOS to the new 4.4 version which now supports 3D Touch functionality, the feature introduced by Apple in its new smartphones which offers a pressure sensitive display. With this feature, the Google Drive app will bring up two pop ups, one for which is to upload photos and the second, to search the content on the Drive.

As Evernote gets more and more users on board its service, there indeed comes a point where all of those users have varied requirements. Evernote found out that one such requirement was needed for Google Drive where it noticed that many of its users copy pasted links from Google’s service. Evernote listened and then worked with Google to deliver better Google Drive integration into its services.

The result is that Evernote’s customers can now easily access files from the connected (linked) Google Drive accounts to make their work flow seamless. Evernote also revealed that since more than half of its users have a Google account, it indeed made sense to integrate the service and now let everyone with a Drive account access their files in the Evernote apps. This beta integration is available for the web on Chrome, and for Android.

Instead of seeing only URL links, anyone can browse anything created or stored in Google Drive right inside Evernote’s notebooks. Customers can now simply add any file in Drive to their notes without leaving Evernote. Moreover, any changes to files in Google Drive will dynamically update in Evernote.

“Once people see how well Evernote and Google Drive work together, they’ll use both products intuitively,” says Evernote CEO Chris O’Neill. “For Evernote enthusiasts, this is a natural progression. Google is organizing the world’s information, and now Google Drive and Evernote are helping you do just that with your information.”

Evernote has promised that other platforms (iOS, Windows) will soon be receiving the same integration.

When you share any file or folder in Google Drive with another user, the shared links will work forever unless you manually change the sharing permissions. For instance, if you have shared a document with an external vendor, they’ll continue to have access to the file long after your business contract may have ended.

In such a situation, wouldn’t it be nice if you could set expiration dates while sharing files in Google Drive? For instance, share a document temporarily for, say, 10 days and access to the file should be revoked automatically after that period has passed.

Add an Auto-Expiry Date for Shared Links in Google Drive

Google Drive does let you set expiration dates for shared links but this option is only available to paid Google App for Work accounts.

Well, no worries. If you have a free Google account, you can still create temporary links that auto-expire after a certain time. Here’s a step by step guide:

1. Go to labnol.org/expire and authorize the web app to access your Google Drive.

2. Open the File Picker and select any file or folder in your Google Drive that you would like share.

3. Enter one or more email addresses (comma separated) of users who should be given viewer (read-only) or editor (read & write) access to your file.

4. Finally, specify the time period after which the access should be limited. You can say 5 hours or 3 weeks or even 2 years.

Click the “Set Expiration” button and you are done. The Google Script will set a time-based trigger that will automatically remove the specified user from the access list after the specified date and time.

You can also use the Google Drive Auditor add-on to analyze the shared permissions of every file in your Google Drive and know who can see your files.

The auto-expiry app will list all the files and folders that are set to expire after a certain period. You can click the “cancel” link against any Drive link to prevent that shared link from expiring automatically.

Inbox by Gmail has received an update that helps you organize your email and improve productivity. Google is adding a bunch of integrations for Inbox including Trello, Github, Drive and so on.

Users will now get regular updates from Trello (project management application) and Github to improve email notifications. Inbox will get a summary of what is new with your Trello projects while Github users will get a summary of code changes and filed issues for each repository. Inbox is now making your alerts more like a newsletter and will keep rolling summary of your Alerts that can be clicked on for more information. You can swipe bundled notifications to the right to mark as “Done” and archive them all.

Finally, the Google Drive integration will add the ability for users to insert Drive links directly in emails as well as save files you receive in emails to Drive. Google says you can also adjust permissions for the Drive links you insert. The update also lets you drag-and-drop contacts within email fields on the web.
The latest updates are available for Inbox on Android , iOS and the Web.

Google has updated Drive for Android with new feature that makes it easier to access your files.

The Google Drive app is adding the ability for users to add file and folder shortcuts to your homescreen. This will save users from launching the app every time they need to edit a file. In order to add homescreen shortcuts, you will have to head to Shortcuts menu and choose Drive shortcuts that is next to the Drive scan and toolbar options.

Next up, you can even upgrade your storage plan by tapping the new ‘Upgrade storage’ option from the navigation drawer. Google has also announced that version 2.4.311 will be the last update for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google has updated Drive with some of the features of Google Search. Drive now supports natural language search. This allows users to conversationally search through the contents of their Drive. Search queries can include documents from a particular contact, or a specific kind of document from a particular month. The search string is automatically converted to the search syntax used by Google. So a search string of “Show Budget Spreadsheets” becomes “budget type: spreadsheets”.

Drive now has smarter search with auto-correct and more. Learn more at goo.gl/PGKm7k

Machine Learning is being used to make the search results constantly better, so the feature is going to improve with use. An auto-correct feature has been added to the search results. Instead of typing out the query again, users can click on suggested corrections, in case there is a typographical error in the search string. These features now make finding files easier, and searching documents faster.

There are a few minor updates to Docs, but these were highly requested features. There is now columns feature for Docs. The columns feature is only available for Word documents. The formatting menu allows for insertion of up to three columns in a document. The spacing between the columns can be specified. Users can toggle on or off a vertical line between the columns.

If a document from an external source is edited within docs, the Revision History in Docs, Sheets and Slides saves a copy of the file in the original file format. These features have started rolling out globally.

Long have many of us waited for Google to add an annual billing option to Google Drive, and probably mostly because we hoped it would come with a discount. It appears today is the day: Google Drive now has options for yearly subscriptions, saving you 16-17% versus the current monthly scheme. The annual plans are offered only at the 100GB and 1TB tiers, at $19.99 and $99.99, respectively. The 1TB annual plan brings Google Drive back into line with pricing for Dropbox Pro, Drive's main competitor. Google's support page hasn't even been updated with this info yet, so it looks like we managed to catch this right as Google flipped the switch.

Presumably, if paid Drive subscriptions were available in your country previously, the annual subscriptions should now be live as well. Just head to the Drive storage settings page here to switch over to the annual plans. The plans may still be rolling out, but most of the AP team is seeing them live now.

Note: Annual plans don't appear to be live for Google Apps accounts yet.

Google had announced last month that billing for the subscription of Google Drive storage will soon be moved to the Play Store. A report by AndroidPolice now confirms that some subscribers of Google Drive are now getting billed on their Google Play account page.

Essentially, Google wants to move all of its paid services under one roof, which is the Google Play Store. It actually makes sense as the process becomes more streamlined and information is easier to access. Apart from the billing migration, there will be no prominent changes to Google Drive. The new billing system will however let users use their Google Play credit to buy Google Drive storage. In case you haven’t been moved, you should wait as the changes are being made this month.

To check your Google Drive subscription in Google Play Store, just open the options, hit Account and then enter the Subscriptions tab.

A couple of days ago we heard Google expanding the carrier billing option to Airtel and Vodafone postpaid customers. While the addition of the new method was officially announced in October at the Google Playtime event in India, the rollout began over the past couple of weeks. Carrier billing payment allows a user to buy apps, music, books and movies from the Google Play Store while the cost is reflected in the user’s mobile postpaid bill. This feature has been available for Android users in a number of countries, however this feature was finally brought to India last year.
