Google Drive - News & Updates

Google is working to improve its Google Drive and has made it easier for users to access the Drive cloud-storage service on the Chrome browser. Google has rolled out relevant applications of Drive – Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations – to the Chrome Web Store. These apps, now known as Docs, Sheets and Slides are available on the web store.
Google has enabled one-click access from Chrome for these apps. Users can also access apps such as Drawings, Forms and Script from the web store. Google added that the Docs, Sheets, and Slides will be listed by default on Chrome in the next few weeks.
Google had launched its cloud-based Drive, previously known as Google Docs, in April. The drive provides up to 5GB for free cloud storage for docs, videos, photos and more.

Since Google Drive launched in April, millions of people have started using it to keep, create and share files. Starting today, it’s even easier to share with others: you can insert files from Drive directly into an email without leaving your Gmail.

Attaching a file in gmail sometimes becomes a pain these days becuae of the limit of 25MB offered by Gmail. Ask someone who might want to share videos often. Gmail now has a killer offering which allows you to attach files up to 10GB in size, using Google Drive.

According to the latest update on the Gmail blog post, you can now insert files directly from Google Drive into your email, without having to leave Gmail. The attachment size of 10GB is almost 400 times larger than a traditional attachment limit of 25 MB. Also, because you’re sending a file stored in the cloud, all your recipients will have access to the same, most-up-to-date version.

This feature is rolling out over the next few days and is only available in the new Compose box feature, so you’ll need to opt-in if you haven’t already. You will get to see the Google Drive logo titled ‘Insert files using Drive’ beside the attachment logo.

Gmail will also double-check that your recipients all have access to any files you’re sending. So, whenever you send a file from Drive that isn’t shared with everyone, you’ll be prompted with the option to change the file’s sharing settings without leaving your email.

Thats a good way to promote their another service but good for users also who want to share large files by email. :)

The native Google Drive for Android has received an update that brings along a couple of new features as well as performance improvements. The web app too has received an update that makes it easier for users to take a look at the contents of the files on Drive with a preview feature.

Google promises a faster experience across the refreshed Android app even though it does not elaborate on the performance improvements that have been incorporated within it. A useful new feature added to the Android app is video streaming for phones running Android versions 3.0 and up. So if you have a phone running Honeycomb and up, you will be able to watch clips and videos shared with you by your family and friends on Google Drive.

As a part of the process of integrating its various products, Google has now made changes to the way data is used, accessed and stored in free cloud storage offered with products such as Gmail, Google Drive and Google+ Photos.

Google announced that instead of offering 10GB storage for Gmail and another 5GB for Drive and Google+ Photos, it will now offer 15GB of unified storage, which can be used between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos.

The move would give more flexibility to users, allowing them to make optimal use of cloud storage for the service they use the most. For instance, users who majorly use Gmail would be able to get 15GB of space instead of 10GB if they don't use Drive or Google+ photos. Similarly, users who store lots of data in Drive but don't use Gmail would get much more space in Drive compared to what they were getting earlier.

It also means that Gmail users who could earlier upgrade to a 25GB mailbox at max when they upgraded to a 100GB Drive plan, would be able to use the full 100GB offered in the same plan and upgrade to up to 16TB storage.

The consolidated space would be grouped under Drive and users will also be able to check how much of the space they've been using for individual services. They'll be able to see a breakdown of storage use across Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos when they hover over the pie chart that depicts Drive usage on the Google Drive storage page.

The changes to Google Drive storage will be rolled out over the next couple of weeks, according to Google. Google Apps users will also be getting shared storage shortly and they'll be able to share their 30GB unified space across Gmail, Drive and Google+ photos.

Google had earlier announced a "Save to Drive" button to save files directly from websites if websites added a code to enable it.

Have you recently purchased a new Chromebook? Maybe you have one on your Christmas wish list. There is some stellar news from Google today that will give you a very large boost to your Google Drive storage limits for 2 whole years. Right now, through January 31st 2015, Chromebook offers will bring you 1TB (terabyte or the equivalent of 1000GB) of free drive storage. It certainly beats the heck out of the previous 100GB offers that many already come with.

Two years of 1TB storage is $240, which outweighs the cost of a number of Chromebooks on the market right now. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday fast approaching, I am willing to bet there will be a number of sweet deals on a few various Chromebook models too. With the latest Chrome OS update also bringing in native Chromecast support in Drive, this deal couldn’t have come at a better time.

If you have never redeemed any Chrome OS offers, it might click-through to your current Chromebook. However, if you already took advantage of a previous offer, then that device will come up as used. I gave it a whirl in hopes it might just work, but alas, I already snagged my 100GB a couple of weeks ago. To see if you can pick it up head to the Chrome OS Goodies page, scroll down a little until you see a similar image to the one above and hit your redeem offer button.

WhatsApp has rolled out an update to its Android app which will let you backup your WhatsApp conversations to Google Drive. This feature will be available in the latest update with version number 2.12.45 for Android. This version can be downloaded from the company’s official website.

With the new update, you will need to select the option to take a backup to Google Drive in the chat ‘Settings’ tab. You will naturally have to connect your Gmail account associated with Drive to the WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp already has the offline conversation backup feature but with the online conversation backup, your WhatsApp chats will show up in Google Drive whenever you take a backup while being connected. This will make backing up comparatively speedier.

This update is not available on iOS or Windows Phone platform yet. Also you will not find it on Google Play Store as well, at the moment.

Backing up conversations has been an oft-requested feature on WhatsApp. Recently company CEO Jan Koum had announced on his Facebook page that WhatsApp has reached 800 million monthly active users.

WhatsApp has also released the Material Design for Android smartphones. It is currently available only on an apk file.

The new Material Design overhaul brings a refined look. Though the general layout is same, it now has a refreshing colour scheme – a deep green title bar that blends seamlessly into the three tabs for calls, chats and contacts. The chat window comes with new buttons to record voice messages, and also made available in attachment option pop-up.

During group chats, one will find a cleaner layout and a larger cover image. One will also find some cosmetic changes made to the media selection screen.
