We call it "Kaashi Kool".
It's Apple Ber in Assamese. Thanks to JioMart I am learning English names of some non popular fruits and vegetables.

bair/ber in hindi , elanthai palam in tamil , boreh hannu in kannada its also also called Indian plum. regarding tradition im not sure but its defintely also used in festivities here in southern indian states as well

Tradition is that. Out of respect to goddess Saraswati. We don't eat Her before Saraswati Puja.
