It's Apple Ber in Assamese. Thanks to JioMart I am learning English names of some non popular fruits and vegetables.We call it "Kaashi Kool".

Tradition is that. Out of respect to goddess Saraswati. We don't eat Her before Saraswati Puja.bair/ber in hindi , elanthai palam in tamil , boreh hannu in kannada its also also called Indian plum. regarding tradition im not sure but its defintely also used in festivities here in southern indian states as well
