RE: Champions Trophy 2017 - News & Updates

MUMBAI Star Sports has kicked off its campaign for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 with a TVC featuring India’s World Cup’11 winning moment.

The tournament, which will see the top eight ICC ranked ODI teams battle it out to become the ultimate champion, promises to be an action-packed affair.

The film opens with the photo of former Indian captain MS Dhoni posing with the ICC World Cup trophy in front of the Gateway of India. The film moves in reverse, starting from the celebrations being done by the fans and the players just after India won the ICC World Cup in 2011, to the most iconic shot of ICC World Cup 2011 – MSD’s winning six in the final at Wankhede stadium. The film ends with a voiceover along with the shot of current Indian captain Virat Kohli. The voiceover states that fans will get to experience the same ‘World Cup wali feeling’ as ‘World Cup of Champions’ is about to come.

The TVC triggers the same feeling of euphoria that the fans experienced when India won the ICC World Cup after a 28-year long wait. The ICC Champions Trophy will be another opportunity for fans to rally behind and cheer for the Indian team which is scaling new heights with every series.

The creative is based on the idea that for an Indian cricket fan, the feeling of winning the World Cup is unparalleled. The fans last experienced this in the ICC World Cup 2011. ICC Champions Trophy’17, World Cup of Champions, promises to bring back the same feeling in 2017.

The TVC went on-air on 26 January during the TV premiere of ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ on Star Plus and during the India versus England T20 on Star Spots. The TVC is digitally available on Star Sports’ social media pages.

BCCI's last shot: Pull out of Champions Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the first time in more than 25 years will remain a mute spectator at the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting that is all set to bring about a deluge of policy changes this weekend.

The two-day board meeting of the ICC will get underway in Dubai on Friday (February 3). It will not matter who is representing India at the meeting though for the record Supreme Court-appointed administrator and IDFC MD and CEO Vikram Limaye will attend along with BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary .

It won't matter because the agenda for the meeting that will have a major impact on all stakeholders in the game was put in place long ago at the ICC's previous meetings in 2016 even as the Indian Cricket Board was busy fighting a never-ending battle for survival in the Supreme Court.

BCCI's only shot at stopping these policy changes from being ratified is if they pull out of an ICC tournament. "Should India decide to pull out of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in June scheduled just before the ICC annual conference the ICC will not survive the financial onslaught such a move will potentially unleash. That's the only way," says an ex-administrator.
For now, following are the policy changes that will be passed at the ICC Board meeting in the next two days and their repercussions:

A) Writing off the Big Three model that had initially allowed BCCI to rake in a 20.3% stake in ICC revenues, the newly done math is now likely to bring down BCCI's revenues from the ICC by half, if not more. Those in the know say 'expect worse damages'.

Repercussion: ICC's position paper for the 2015-23 financial cycle and one for the following seven years threatens India with a loss in excess of Rs 3000 cr.

B) Ireland and Afghanistan likely to be given Test status which in turn could make way for a new Test cricket structure. The structure may not be a two-tier but a baseball-styled conference structure as it happens in the MLB (US).

Repercussion: The BCCI's financial muscle has been such that member countries of the ICC depend on India's overseas tours to earn dividends from their respective rights holders. India, in turn, had been trying to use it to its advantage to create a viable home season like the English summer and the Australian Boxing Day which could now be made to wind up.

C) One ICC tournament mandatory every year alongside qualification tournaments for T20 WC.

Repercussion: India's biggest fear, and rightly so, will be that such a move could destabilise its IPL window, thereby hurting the interests of a well-oiled league that's easily world cricket's envy right now.

D) Pooling of overseas television rights: this is not on the ICC Board agenda but will be part of discussion among member boards.

Repercussion: From a section of broadcasters to ex-BCCI administrators, they've all never found logic in how rights that do not sell individually - can sell in a bundle. But that aside, India's concern also stems from the fact that host countries get to earn the most from India tours and therefore the BCCI should have a say in the decision.

The water has already flown from under the bridge and there's little the BCCI can do now except wait for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. Only if they threaten to pull out of it, they believe, will the wind begin to blow their way .

Will they be ready in time?

Post the ICC Board meeting, these policy changes will come up for ratification at the annual conference of the governing body in June this year. To be specific, the annual conference will be held soon after the conclusion of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
The question Indian cricket administrators need to ask themselves and those governing them right now is if they will be ready by June if they need to defy these "undesirable" policy changes.

Should the Supreme Court see reason and the Committee of Administrators play ball, India can well bring out the ace up its sleeve.

BCCI's Members Participation Agreement (MPA) with the ICC clearly states that should their interests not be upheld, they are free to walk away. India's pulling out is not something world cricket will merely sit and watch. Under former president Anurag Thakur, BCCI had already begun threatening the same until the SC order cracked a different whip altogether.

BCCI new head Vinod Rai confirms India’s participation in ICC Champions Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) new interim head Vinod Rai put all speculations to rest and made it clear that India would be participating in the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for June in England.

According to a report in Bangalore Mirror, the former Comptroller and Auditor General of India said that the Indian cricket governing body will request the International Cricket Council (ICC) not to change the controversial revenue model formula now but later in the year.

A few media reports claim that India in protest may pull out of the ICC Champions Trophy, leaving the tournament in disarray. However, rubbishing all those reports, Rai told Bangalore Mirror, “I can’t comment on rumours.”

When asked whether BCCI is mulling such a move in protest against the new revenue model, Rai said why should BCCI withdraw the Indian team from the tournament?

“Doesn’t the Indian public want us to participate in the tournament? Everybody says we can withdraw from the Champions Trophy. Is it feasible? Will there not be a huge backlash? Gone are the days when we could threaten and get away,” Rai said.

The new BCCI head is well aware that the participation in the Champions Trophy is linked to voting on a new revenue sharing model which may be implemented in the ongoing ICC meeting. As per the current ‘Big-three’ model, BCCI, ECB and CA enjoy the maximum share from ICC annual income.

If at all the ICC brings in the change in the revenue sharing model, the Indian cricket board will bear huge financial loss but still receive a share of 20 per cent.

Morkel will be considered for Champions Trophy: Faf du Plessis - Cricbuzz

Faf du Plessis, South Africa's Twenty20 International captain, on Friday (February 17), said that Morne Morkel, the experienced seamer, will be considered for the forthcoming Champions Trophy to be held in England in June this year. The 32-year-old pacer has been laid low by a bulging disc in his back since the One-Day International tri-series played in West Indies in June last year.

However, after a lengthy rehabilitation programme, Morkel has made a welcome return to competitive cricket and is currently playing in the Momentum One-Day cup. "Someone like Morne Morkel has done really well in one-day cricket, [he] is someone who is on the outside [but] who is very much part of the plans," du Plessis noted. "But everything is now up to his back and seeing how he responds to playing cricket, which he hasn't done for a very long time. It's how he comes back from that."

Morkel has bagged 181 wickets at an average of 24.6 in ODIs. However, it would be tough for Morkel to break into the South African set-up as they are on an 11-match winning streak. He is also coming back into action after a lengthy injury layoff.
