Amazon is all geared up to give a tough fight to Netflix in India as it prepares to launch its Prime Video service. The company is hosting an event in Mumbai tomorrow, where it is likely to roll out the Prime Video service. Amazon Prime Video offers users access to unlimited streaming of exclusive Amazon Originals, movies, and TV shows on a subscription basis. It is an extension of the e-commerce portal’s Prime service which offers subscribers with services like free delivery of products on a priority basis, along with an early access to lightning deals.

Amazon India launched its Prime service in the country in July. The Rs 499-priced service allows its paid subscribers access to products and deals before regular customers. Last month, the company announced that it will be bringing its Prime Video service in the country along with 200 other countries worldwide. Although the Amazon Prime Video service appears to part of the Prime service umbrella, it is unclear if Amazon will be allowing users access to all content within the Rs 499 subscription price. It is to be noted that currently, the introductory price is Rs 499 and Amazon might take up the prices given that a lot of original TV shows and series will also be on offer.

With the coming of the new-age content production as well as consumption, video streaming services not only partner with popular production houses and artists for their content but also produce their own exclusive content. Currently, the Amazon Prime Video service, which is available in countries including the US, UK, Germany, and Austria, offers content including Amazon Original series like The Grand Tour, Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, The Man in the High Castle, and the Tumble Leaf among others.

Amazon has borrowed a leaf from rival Netflix’s books to offer localized content in India. For the Bollywood-loving audience, Amazon has joined hands with Dharma Productions and T-series to stream some of its existing and upcoming movies. In future, Amazon plans to add more publishers and content to its service. The content isn’t only limited to movies or TV shows for the elders, Amazon is also planning to bring quality content for the younger ones. For kids, Amazon has already signed a content deal with Green Gold Animation to stream shows of Chhota Bheem, Super Bheem and Mighty Raju.

Coming to the pricing, rival Netflix is currently offering a free 30-day trial followed by monthly packages which start at Rs 500 and go up to Rs 800. Although Amazon also offers a 30-day trial for Prime membership, we could expect the company to price its Prime Video packages on more or less similar lines as Netflix. Given the popularity of Amazon’s e-commerce platform in India, which appears to even overshadow home-grown e-tailer Flipkart , consumers might be in for a treat with quality content as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix go head-to-head.

Amazon Prime Video goes live in India, costs just Rs 499 for a year

Amazon Prime Video is finally live in India. The service can be accessed by downloading the Amazon Prime Video app on both Android and
iOS. Currently, the service is free to use for Amazon Prime members, which costs Rs 999 a year but is currently available for Rs 499 under an introductory offer. This makes it the cheapest offering for Amazon Prime Video anywhere in the world.

In the run up to the launch, Amazon partnered with a number of Indian movie production houses, content aggregators and others to ensure local content availability. At the time of launch, Amazon Prime Video has content from a number of studios including Dharma Productions, Vishesh Films, T-Series and others, which includes exclusive online streaming rights as well as rights for upcoming titles before their television broadcast. Amazon Prime Video also has Amazon Original content, including the most pirated show of all time — The Grand Tour. Amazon is also reportedly trying to get online streaming rights for the Indian Premiere League cricket tournament.

Amazon Prime Video also allows users to download content for online viewing and there are also sub-titles for some content in Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and others. Users can also choose the quality they want to stream and download content, so they can save on data charges or space available on their device.

The aggressive pricing for Amazon Prime Video will impact existing video streaming services, especially Netflix, which starts from Rs 500 a month. Hotstar too could witness an impact but it already has a lot of exclusive content including popular TV shows from Star TV’s bouquet of channels as well as exclusive rights for popular international content.

Amazon is hosting an event in Mumbai today where they will announce more details about the service. Stay tuned for BGR India’s first impressions of Amazon Prime Video.
