Amazon partners Dharma Productions ahead of Prime Video India launch

After Vishesh Films, Amazon has now partnered with Dharma Productions as it gears up to launch its Prime Video service in India.

Amazon is gearing up to launch its Prime Video service in India. The move comes months after the e-commerce giant launched its Prime membership service in the country. Amazon today announced it has struck a deal with Dharma Productions for digital rights of its catalog of existing as well as upcoming Bollywood movies. The deal also makes Amazon Prime Video the first video streaming service to premiere forthcoming Dharma Production releases, including Karan Johar directed, highly anticipated Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.

Amazon Prime Video will also be premiering other upcoming Dharma Production movies such as Ok Jaanu starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, that features Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. Members of Amazon Prime subscription service will also get exclusive access to other movies from the production house, including Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,Student of the YearKal Ho Naa HoKapoor & Sons and Agneepath among others. One can access Amazon Prime videos from anywhere – Android or iOS smartphone or tablet, laptop, desktop, smart TVs, or even from game consoles.

“We are excited to have Dharma Productions’ library and future slate of titles for the upcoming launch of Prime Video. We know our Prime members are going to love the broad selection of films and stories – everything from soulful romance to heartfelt and funny family stories – that Dharma does so well,” said Nitesh Kripalani, director and country head, Amazon Video India.  Commenting on the deal, Dharma Productions CEO Apoorva Mehta said, “We have kept a close eye on the explosion of digital media, and the increased consumption trends of Bollywood content on Video-On-Demand and OTT Platforms. We are confident that partnering with a credible brand like Amazon will go a long way in ensuring that our content will not only be seamlessly streamed, but will also see a huge demand from users of Prime Video.”
Besides Dharma Productions, Amazon also recently partnered Vishesh Films, which is owned by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt. It is also a long-term deal, which will offer Amazon Prime Video users with an access to entire film catalog of the production house, including the recently released Raaz Reboot and other blockbuster movies such as Murder, Aashiqui 2 and Jannat among others. Amazon India also seems to be in talks with Yash Raj Productions, as the landing page of Prime Video also has a poster of Shah Rukh Khan’s recently released movie Fan, with a ‘coming soon’ sign.
