Airtel to upgrade Delhi NCR 3G network by December

India’s top carrier Bharti Airtel is upgrading its existing third-generation (3G ) technology network to improve mobile services comparable to 4G-like speeds which it said is likely to conclude by next month.

The Gurgaon-based telco has sent out communication to all its Delhi NCR subscribers informing about the move, allowing seamless services during the entire exercise and also said it would reduce the carbon footprint of its telecom towers.

With the additional spectrum, we have now procured we are upgrading our 3G network to dramatically improve performance and deliver 4G-like speeds even on 3G, the company said in an e-mailed letter to subscribers.

The Sunil Mittal-driven telco, however, cautioned that there might be some teething issues that consumers could face in the next few days.

We would request you to bear with us so as to deliver a world class Delhi network for you by December, the statement said.

The telco added that its engineers would be working through the night to ensure mobile services continue to work in an uninterrupted manner even it undertakes this change.

The network up-gradate, according to the
Airtel spokeswoman, is a part of telco’s ambitious network transformation program,
Project Leap, and the objective of communication was to make subscribers aware.

In November 2015, Airtel launched a mega initiative to expand and upgrade mobile networks across the country at Rs 60,000 crore spend for a three-year term.

As we undertake this massive network transformation, we also commit to reduce the carbon footprint of our network towers and ensure we meet our self-declared sustainability targets for a greener Delhi, it added.

With more than 257 million subscribers, Bharti Airtel enjoys leadership in the country’s mobile telephony market with 32% pie.
