Google has announced a new YouTube app built from scratch that gives users more control over how much data is consumed while watching or saving a particular video. YouTube Go will be rolled out in the coming months, and Google is asking users to sign up to be among the first to get the app when it becomes available. Google has built the app with a particular focus on the Indian audience and has also come up with a tagline — “A b Mazze udao, data nahin !”

“YouTube Go is designed with four concepts in mind. [...] The app is designed to be offline first and work even when there’s low or no connectivity. It’s also cost-effective, providing transparency and reducing data usage. And finally, it’s a social experience, connecting you with the people and content you care about,” Johanna Wright, VP of Product Management, YouTube explains the idea behind the YouTube Go app. Following are some of the notable features of the new app.

The YouTube app already offers users the ability to save videos offline to watch them later, even if there is no internet connection. The idea was to help users save precious mobile data by saving videos on Wi-Fi and then watch it later. YouTube Go app improves this feature by letting users choose the resolution in which they want to watch or save the video, and also inform how much data will be consumed on different resolutions. If you are not sure what to expect from the video, the app will now give you a short preview of the entire video. Clicking on a video thumbnail will trigger the quick preview feature.

Google is also improving how users discover new videos and share their experience with friends and family. The home screen of the app has been tweaked to show the trending and popular videos in the user’s location. Users will also be able to send and receive videos with friends and family without the need for an internet connection via Bluetooth. Google will be rolling out the YouTube Go app in India in the coming few months. It has also revealed that the app will support up to 10 Indic languages.

YouTube Go, a Google for India App, Is Now Available to Download

YouTube Go was previewed back in September, at the Google for India event. Built for India, the app is offline-centric and meant to combat the data connectivity woes that the country faces along with other emerging markets. Users will be able to preview videos when offline, share them with nearby friends when without data, and of course also download videos to watch when offline later.

The YouTube Go app is listed on Google Play, and is available to download in India. The listing description reads, "YouTube Go A brand new app to download, enjoy and share videos... bina data udae!" The app is listed as "unreleased", and comes with the warning that it may be unstable.

The app weighs in at 8.5MB, and supports devices running on Android versions all the way back to v4.1 Jelly Bean. As we mentioned, the YouTube Go app has several features geared towards offline use, as well as data management. Apart from being able to share videos with nearby friends without using the Internet, users will be able to preview videos via their thumbnails, and see the weight of videos available at different (basic, standard) resolutions.

Detailing the YouTube Go offline sharing feature, Google says users will be able to share videos via Bluetooth with friends nearby without using data in seconds, and once it is received on the other end, a 15KB "Internet security check" allows the video to be played. We tried the feature, and it worked.

The listing was first spotted by Android Police, which notes that though the APK file is available, the app seems to only work in India for now.

After installing the app from the Google Play Store listing , you need to register the app using your mobile number just like you would on Google Allo or Google Duo. The verification works through an OTP code and then it collates and suggests you videos based on your ‘Thumbs up’, Subscribers and YouTube history in the ‘Home’ tab. The second tab is ‘Saved’ which gives you a list of the videos that you have saved on your smartphone.

The downloads work fairly simply. Tapping on any video shows you the ‘Download’ popup, giving you details about the free space on your smartphone and the quality of video that you want to ‘Save’ or ‘Play’. There is no direct way to play any video using this app unless you tap and then select ‘Play’ to play any video. There are a few interesting tidbits that we came across while using the app. The first one was the presence of an ‘in-app updater’ in their ‘Settings’ menu.

The second thing that we noticed was the fact that the mobile number being used to register this app should be attached with your Google account or YouTube ID. You could turn the notifications about ‘Daily videos’ in the settings menu. Another important thing is that when you tap on any video, the app shows you snapshots or screengrabs taken from the video in quick succession to help you preview your video before you download the video. The popup also gives the option to download in Low quality or Standard quality along with the size of the video content.

Last but not the least, this app lets you share the videos with your friends or family using the ‘Nearby’ feature without the need of any internet. Its not known if the company is using NFC or Android Beam using NFC protocol.

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Tuesday it would roll out a mobile YouTube application designed for India, boosting the search company's presence in a burgeoning market with spotty Internet access.

Since the fall, Google has been conducting extensive tests in India of YouTube Go, which allows users to save videos to watch offline and monitor their data use.

A beta version of the app has been released in the Google Play Store in India, and will be released in other emerging markets later, company executives said in an interview.
