Amazon India on Monday, January 23, 2023, launched its Air Cargo service Amazon Air in the country. Amazon Air is launching for the first time outside the United States and Europe. In India, Amazon Air will have two dedicated cargo aircraft with a capacity of 20,000 packages.
Telangana IT and Industries minister KT Rama Rao officially launched the service at GMR Aero Technic, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, and said that he was proud that Hyderabad is home to the largest campus of Amazon.
This dedicated freight service was first launched in the US in 2016 and consists of over 110 freight aircraft that cover more than 70 destinations across the world. In India, Amazon Air will be run in collaboration with cargo operator QuickJet Cargo Airlines Pvt Ltd using Boeing 737-800 aircrafts. It will initially cover four cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
In other regions, Amazon will continue to move goods by air through third-party aircraft firms such as Indigo, Spicejet, and Vistara. Besides air, Amazon also utilizes railways and trucks to deliver goods across the country.
A dedicated cargo fleet will significantly reduce transportation time and help Amazon in servicing more same-day and next-day deliveries to its customers. “We’re thrilled to launch Amazon Air in India to ensure we can provide our growing customer base with great selection, low prices, and faster deliveries,” said Sarah Rhoads, Vice President, Amazon Global Air.
