JioHotstar, under its Hotstar Specials label, has launched multiple adaptations of hit television shows with varying levels of success. This time, it’s Monk that’s being adapted, with Ram Kapoor set to headline the show, christened Mistry. Created by Andy Breckman, the original series followed a troubled detective trying to solve his wife’s murder, a case that exacerbated his obsessive–compulsive disorder and ultimately led to his suspension from the police force. The show ran for eight seasons on the USA Network.
The adaptation remains faithful to the original series; however, it takes some liberties to make the story more suited to the Indian audience. The eight-episode season adapts select episodes from the original series while adding its own flavour with minor changes to the overarching storyline. The connecting thread throughout the season is engaging enough for casual viewers who aren’t used to episodic storytelling, but the mystery combined with the humour in most episodes will keep you hooked.
Ram Kapoor has excelled in the role of Armaan Mistry, bringing his own take to the character. His eccentric actions that are stemming from his OCD combined with his unusual observations, deliver solid humour. The lead cast is well chosen and performs adequately.
Overall, Mistry is a decent procedural infused with both mystery and comedy, which makes it stand out. Mistry premieres on JioHotstar on June 27, 2025. All episodes of the original series, Monk, are also currently streaming on JioHotstar.
