Microsoft Windows 10 S Operating System Launched for Education in Bid to Take on Google's Chrome OS

Microsoft's Tuesday New York event was centred on education, and the company took centre stage to introduce Windows 10 S as a simpler, more secure operating system meant for students. The Windows 10 S software is tied to the Windows Store, which means students can only run apps downloaded from the Store. Windows 10 S is free for schools, but is priced at $50 for others.

What is Microsoft Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S is a new Windows experience that is built from the ground up keeping in mind classrooms. As we mentioned, Windows 10 S only runs apps downloaded from the Windows Store, and for Microsoft, this means that everything is verified for both performance and safety. Students won't be exposed to potentially dangerous apps, while every app is certified by Microsoft to ensure there is no performance drop over time.

Introducing Windows 10 S

Streamlined for security and superior performance.

Windows 10 S is a specific configuration of Windows 10 Pro that offers a familiar, productive Windows experience that’s streamlined for security and performance. By exclusively using apps in the Windows Store and ensuring that you browse safely with Microsoft Edge, Windows 10 S keeps you running fast and secure day in and day out.

You’ll be able to upgrade any Windows 10 S device to Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 S only runs sandboxed apps that are available in the Windows Store. You can’t even download Google Chrome on this thing.
Microsoft has a solution for you. If you buy a cheap $189 (Rs. 12132.23) Windows 10 S laptop, you’ll be able to upgrade it to a full-fledged Windows 10 Pro operating system for a one-time fee of $49 (Rs. 3145).

S for s***
Seriously m$ thinks it can fool users to use its crappy app store using this trick! Windows metro is a failed experiment, but m$ does not learn or listen to its users. Another experiment putting old wine in new bottle - any one remember windows rt?

Yeah, absoultely!

In my opinion, Windows store apps aren't that crappy actually they are more cooler
Control: Windows Store, all apps go through a submission and review process, so Microsoft is able to weed out dangerous programs and ensure that only safe ones are making it onto your system.
Permissions and Sandboxing: Another downside to desktop apps is their ability to do anything. so anything you install could potentially wreak havoc on your system, destroying personal files, transmitting data, or logging your keystorkes. When you uninstall any desktop program it always leaves something behind
Update: Updating windows apps is easier (automatic and all update at one place) compared to desktop apps
Microsoft made converting of desktop apps to windows apps easier with Project Centennial
Its not the apps which looks crappy its the user interface and icons which doesn't look good and microsoft is on it with project neon (people app project neon)

Linux is just too powerful for Windows 10 S, so Microsoft blocked it
If Windows 10 S will only allow apps that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store, it can run the new downloadable Linux apps, right? Wrong!
Here's why: Microsoft is actively blocking "command-line" apps that run outside the safe environment of Windows 10 S, Microsoft senior program manager Rich Turner wrote in a blog post on Thursday.
Microsoft said it created Windows 10 S as a way for students and even mainstream users to add a bit more security to their Windows 10 experience.

Windows 10s will become popular very soon among those who just do basic stuffs like web surfing. Device Pricing will be a key factor. If they price it around 14k then it is a deal breaker
