Rohit Sharma fashions India's see-saw chase against West Indies

CUTTACK: On the eve of the first ODI on Monday, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy said that his team had failed to capitalise on the opportunities that came their way in the Test series.

It was the same old story on Tuesday as the West Indies lost the first ODI against India at the Barabati Stadium on Tuesday by one wicket in spite of having their opponents on the ropes early on.

However, full credit should go to Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja, whose 83-run sixth wicket partnership helped India recover from 59 for five in the 12th over.

Chasing 212 runs for victory, India made a roaring start, racing to 37 for no loss in the first four overs before West Indies pacer Kemar Roach struck twice to remove opener Parthiv Patel and Gautam Gambhir in the fifth over. Roach was again on target in his next over, getting one to come in sharply to clean bowl Virat Kohli.

We'll learn from our mistakes, says Sehwag

CUTTACK: Rohit Sharma, the Man of the Match in the first ODI against West Indies on Tuesday, rued the fact that he could not finish the match on his own.

"The idea was to play through the innings, victory slipped out of their hands but West Indies skipper Darren Sammy lauded his boys for their never-say-die spirit with which they pushed world champions India in the first one-dayer, on Tuesday. In a thrilling low-scoring match India prevailed by one wicket with seven balls to spare while chasing 212 to win.

"Everytime you lose it is quite disappointing. We just didn't have the last spark to take us past the finish line. The opening bowlers did well to give us a start and we fought all the way to the end, but it wasn't enough. We could have done things differently, we even bowled 23 extras, but I would like to commend the boys. They fought with never-say-die spirit and it is going to stick," Sammy said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

A relieved Indian captain, Virender Sehwag said, "I was sitting in the same place and not moving! It's good to win another nail-biter. Whatever you tell No. 10 or No. 11, they always do what they want to do. I just told them to play till the end and whatever happens is fine. Rohit and Jadeja batted really well in that partnership and we should have won it easily from there, but still good to end up winning. We hope to learn from our batting mistakes in the coming games."

There is no excuse for batsmen's poor show: Sehwag

Though he hailed the efforts of the lower-order batsmen for pulling off a thrilling win over the West Indies in the first one-dayer here today, India's stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag felt that there was no excuse for the batsmen's poor show.

Chasing an easy 212, India stumbled to 59 for five before riding on Rohit Sharma's 72 and spirited showings by Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav to scrape past the target with seven balls to spare.

"In India you hardly see the team tottering at 59/5. Our batsmen made mistakes. Hope we will come up with strong batting performance in next games," Sehwag said after their dramatic win.

"We have to learn from our mistakes. There were two good balls. The ball came in and we (myself and Virat Kohli) played early and made mistakes," he added.

Sehwag was particularly critical of Parthiv Patel, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina's shot selections.
