Search engine giant Google has announced a deal with Israel-based Waze, a map app for an estimated price of 1.3 billion dollars.

According to News.com.au, in a bid to stay ahead of Apple and Facebook in lifestyle-centered apps on devices, Google acquired Waze to 'outsmart traffic' and find best routes from home to work everyday.

Vice President of Google Geo-products, Brian McClendon said that Waze and Google will help enhance each other with the traffic update feature of Waze, and Google's search capabilities.

Waze, which was earlier eyed by Facebook, aims at creating driving easier with reliable street maps.

According to the report, Waze was introduced in US after its success in Israel four years back which allowed motorists to gauge traffic, know about speed traps, short cuts, hazards and accidents.

Mapping application Waze is currently at the centre of a major controversy in Rio de Janeiro after a 70-year-old woman was redirected into a dangerous slum when following directions provided the GPS navigation application.

Waze 4.0 is now finally available in the Play Store. Along with the UI refresh mentioned below, the update brings significantly reduced battery consumption, according to the change log.

The Google-owned navigation app styling itself as an on-the-go social network has received a new feature today that alerts drivers when they are traveling over the speed limit. Waze will be rolling out this new detail starting today in France, Brazil, Italy, and 15 other countries. The US won’t be getting this functionality quite yet, but Waze is promising that it will arrive in the near future.

Think about the last time you were stuck in traffic—the minutes you spent staring at a long line of red taillights probably didn't feel productive. The Assistant can already help with navigation in Google Maps, so it’s easier to search for places along your route or add a new stop while you’re on the go. And starting to roll out today in the U.S., you can get help from the Assistant in Waze on Android phones in English.

Thanks to its community of millions of drivers contributing real-time data every second, Waze helps you beat traffic, while the Assistant lets you to play music and podcasts, message your friends and call your family hands-free—without ever leaving the navigation screen. Many of your favorite Waze features, like reporting traffic, pinpointing a pothole or checking for alternate routes, can also be accessed simply by using your voice. Just say “Hey Google, report traffic” or “Hey Google, avoid tolls” when navigating with Waze and your Google Assistant will help keep you connected, informed and minimize distractions while you’re on the go, so you can keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

Crowdsourced navigation app and Google subsidiary Waze is adding new features that allow you to report within the app unplowed roads made more dangerous or inaccessible during snowstorms, and also to see reports posted by other people who have already added their own to the map. This Waze update was also developed by the company after it received a recommendation from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to build this kind of reporting option, working with the municipal agency through its "Waze for Cities Data" partnership and data sharing program.
