Trott poised for Warwickshire return

Warwickshire have confirmed that Jonathan Trott will make his comeback in a pre-season fixture against Gloucestershire at Edgbaston beginning on April 1. Trott, who left England's Ashes tour in November due to the effects of a stress-related illness, said that he had been "overwhelmed" by messages of support and was keen to get back to playing.

Trott had been a mainstay at No. 3 for England in Test and one-day cricket before returning home from Australia after the first Test in Brisbane. Speaking last week, Dennis Amiss, the former England batsman who is chairman of Trott's 2014 benefit committee, said he expected the batsman to return in April and Warwickshire have now announced that he will be involved in the two-day friendly.

It was previously decided that Trott would not join the Warwickshire tour of Barbados, which had led some to question his rehabilitation. However, he will link up with his team-mates after they return on March 25 and take part against Gloucestershire and then in the first-class warm-up against Oxford MCCU on April 7-9, ahead of the new county season.

"I've been overwhelmed with the kind messages of support from players, coaches and fans over the last few months, and I'm really looking forward to joining up with Warwickshire ahead of the new season," Trott said.

"We've got a strong squad that's capable of challenging for trophies in all competitions, and I'm determined to play a big role and hopefully contribute to more success for the Bears in 2014 and beyond."

Trott averages 46.45 from his 49 Tests and more than 50 in one-day cricket and England have struggled to fill the No. 3 spot in both formats during his enforced absence. Aside from Twenty20 cricket, England's next fixture is an ODI against Scotland on May 9, ahead of the visit of Sri Lanka, with Trott already a candidate to return if he can prove his form and mental readiness to resume his international career.

Dougie Brown, Warwickshire's director of cricket, said: "Everyone at Edgbaston will be thrilled to see Jonathan return to training after the club's pre-season tour of Barbados, and take to the field at Edgbaston in the 2014 season. Having met recently, he looks in great shape and is certainly hungry to score plenty of runs for Warwickshire. He's been a crucial member of the England set-up for nearly five years and I am certain he will be back as England's number three in the near future."
