'Rising England star on drugs when killed'
February 26, 2013 19:54 IST

One of English cricket's rising stars died after being electrocuted on a railway line then struck by a train as he attempted to flee police while on drink and drugs, a coroner's inquest was told on Tuesday.

Surrey batsman Tom Maynard, widely regarded as a future England [ Images ] international, was found dead near Wimbledon [ Images ] Park station on the London [ Images ] Underground network in the early morning on June 18 last year.

The 23-year-old son of former England batsman Matthew Maynard was electrocuted after stepping on a live track before he was hit by a train, causing him to die from multiple injuries, Westminster Coroner's Court in central London heard.

Maynard had earlier been stopped by police nearby after his black Mercedes [ Images ] was seen driving erratically but he then fled the vehicle and left his keys in the ignition.

A post-mortem examination revealed alcohol levels in his body four times above the legal limit for drivers and that he had taken cocaine and ecstasy in the form of MDMA after a night out with his two flatmates, reports AFP.

Tests on hair samples indicated Maynard may have been a regular drug user for as long as three-and-a-half months before his death, the inquest heard.

Forensic pathologist Simon Poole told the inquest that it was impossible to say whether electrocution or the impact of the train had killed Maynard.

Cardiff-born Maynard, who came through the ranks at Glamorgan, where his father had been a key player and later a coach, was a member of the second-string England Lions squad that toured Bangladesh and Sri Lanka [ Images ] last year.

A formal verdict on his death has yet to be given.

In England and Wales, inquests are held to examine sudden or unexplained deaths and can record any one of a number of possible verdicts including suicide or misadventure. They do not apportion blame.

In a statement issued today via the Professional Cricketers' Association, the Maynard family urged that Tom's life not be defined by the evidence heard at the inquest.

"The results of the inquest do not define our son," the statement said, adding: "The fact that so very many people thought the world of him is what defines him as a person.

"The only people who would judge Tom on the findings of the inquest are people who didn't know him.

"He made choices that night that tragically cost him his life but his devastated family and friends will love and miss him unconditionally, always.

"He was a very special person and his death leaves a huge hole in all our lives."

We need to give more time to Sehwag: Dhoni
Last updated on: February 26, 2013 18:18 IST

Virender Sehwag's patchy form continued but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni still believes that the senior opener should be given more time to get back to form as he is a match-winner.

Asked about the performance of Sehwag, who played in the Test wearing spectacles, Dhoni said, "I think we just need to give him more time. Well, that's how he bats.

"About Viru pa, I've said this plenty of times before, when he scores runs, he looks a fantastic player and when he doesn't, you can question the shot he played or the way he played.

"He's someone who's always played with that sort of flair. At times, we get very critical about him. We all know he is someone who can change the course of the game, he's an attacking player. So let's go forward with that kind of an attitude," he said.

Sehwag had scores of 2 and 19 in the first Test which concluded in Chennai.

'Will keep batting at No.6 till Jadeja gets used to Test cricket'
Last updated on: February 26, 2013 17:02 IST

MS Dhoni was a satisfied man after his team beat Australia in the first Test. Bikash Mohapatra says his decision to persist with spinners and bat up the order played in India's favour.

Having suffered a demoralising home defeat against England last year, India got off to a good start in 2013 with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Australia in the opening Test at the MA Chidambaram stadium, in Chennai, on Tuesday.

And no one was more satisfied than MS Dhoni

His demand for dead turning tracks may have backfired against England, but held him, and his team, in good stead in Chennai.

"It is nothing that has changed," explained Dhoni.

Chamu Chibhabha provided Zimbabwe with a glimmer of hope when he blasted an unbeaten 48, featuring three fours and two sixes, but the West Indies had few problems reaching their target.

Opener Kieran Powell, who scored half-centuries in the previous two matches, laid the platform for the West Indian reply with a solid 42 from 52 deliveries before Bravo took over, adding a half century to his hundred from the first match to finish the series with an average of 172.

Rewind: How India strangled the Aussies in Chennai
Last updated on: February 27, 2013 08:07 IST

India won the opening match in the four-Test series against Australia by eight wickets on Tuesday.

Captain MS Dhoni and spinner R Ashwin were the wreckers-in-chief, as the Aussies were outplayed on a dustbowl of a pitch through the five days of the Test.

Rediff.com looks back at moments from the memorable victory.

- Scorecard

Playing his 100th Test, Harbhanjan Singh led the Indian team out of the pavilion on Day 1 of the Test.

However, in no way did the match prove memorable for the 'Turnbanator'.

Given the conditions, which were conducive for spinners, it was a quiet match for Bhajji, who managed to claim only three wickets in the match.

Now, a song praising Dhoni's heroics!
February 27, 2013 08:14 IST

Thrilled with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's [ Images ] on-field exploits, a fan from Ranchi has composed a song in praise of the Team India [ Images ] captain.

The 3.41 minute song, uploaded in YouTube, highlights Dhoni’s hand in leading India to victories in the two World Cups, his helicopter shots, his passion for the game and several other achievements since the star's emergence in the cricketing world.

"It struck my mind while watching the January 19 One-Day tie against England [ Images ] in Ranchi. From then onwards I tried penning the lyrics and completed it last week. I have uploaded it on YouTube," upcoming singer Rohan Deo Pathak said.

A stage singer by profession, Rohan said he has also tried to put photographs to match his lyrics, music and song.

"I am also very happy that the song came days before Dhoni's 206 (not out) and India's win over Australia [ Images ]," said a beaming Rohan soon after India defeated Australia by eight wickets on the final day of the first cricket Test in Chennai.

Saying that he has also heard from friends about the YouTube song, Dhoni's former coach Chanchal Bhattacharya said, "It's good to hear anything in praise of Dhoni, and he deserves it. I will watch the song before commenting on it."

Lauding Dhoni's unbeaten knock, Bhattacharya said, "It's another memorable knock by Dhoni. But what makes the difference is his critics will think twice before commenting on Dhoni's batting prowess and leading the team in Test cricket."

Warne provides Aussies quick feedback on Chennai defeat
February 27, 2013 08:26 IST

Known for speaking his mind on cricketing matters, spin legend Shane Warne [ Images ] gave the Australian team a pep talk after the visitors' comprehensive defeat to India [ Images ] in the first cricket Test in Chennai on Tuesday.

Warne is not new when it comes to offering ideas and had, in a two-part manifesto last month, launched an attack on the state of Australian cricket, calling several CA officials "muppets", including high-performance chief Pat Howard and selection boss John Inverarity.

After watching the Australian team crash to an eight-wicket loss at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, Warne, commentating on the series, entered the field to have an impromptu mid-ground chat with the players.

Eight members from the Australian team management, including skipper Michael Clarke [ Images ], who regards Warne as one of his cricketing mentors, coach Mickey Arthur and his assistant Steve Rixon were seen listening attentively to the former leg-spinner.

Also in attendance, though for a brief while, were tweakers Nathan Lyon and Xavier Doherty.

Warne, however, declined to divulge details of his meeting with the players.

At the post-match press conference, Clarke joked about Warne's presence.

"Warnie is in town, I'll see if he's available," Clarke said.

Dhoni has changed; he's more assertive: Gavaskar
Last updated on: February 27, 2013 08:29 IST

Sunil Gavaskar says Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become more assertive, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India and selectors' faith in him will only spur him to do better.

"If the captain has the confidence of the board and the selectors, it gives him confidence to employ tactics on the field. It's a huge plus. Now that he is doing so well, it will give him even more confidence," the former India captain said.

Dhoni stroked a maiden counter-attacking double hundred as India scored a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test in Chennai.

"He has changed a bit from the England series. He is more assertive. Towards the end of England series in Nagpur he was trying to be more assertive, showing displeasure at the lack of efforts by the players and we have seen that in Chennai as well," Gavaskar told NDTV.

Dhoni's career-best score, but not most memorable
Last updated on: February 27, 2013 11:00 IST

Mahendra Singh Dhoni appears to be modest in his interview with Rediff.com's Bikash Mohapatra about scoring a majestic double century.

It might have been his first double hundred in Test cricket.

-Dhoni has changed; he's more assertive: Gavaskar

It might have been an innings that helped him break a plethora of records.

And it might have been a performance that helped him silence his detractors to a considerable extent.

However, when asked if his career-best innings of 224 at the MA Chidabaram stadium in the opening Test, was the most memorable innings he had ever played, MS Dhoni replied in the negative. The Indian captain pointed out that it was an innings during the formative years of his career that he would always cherish.
