Back pain forces Bird to return to Australia
February 25, 2013 17:31 IST

Australia's [ Images ] right-arm fast-medium bowler Jackson Bird will be flying back to his country within the next 24 hours to undergo "precautionary scans" after he reported of back pain.

"Jackson has reported some low level back pain and we feel the best course of action to determine the issue is to send him back to Australia for scans," Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said.

"If the scans come back clear, then he will return to India [ Images ] to take up his place with the squad," he added, according to a Cricket Australia release.

The 26-year-old has taken 11 wickets from two Tests since making his debut against Sri Lanka [ Images ] in Melbourne [ Images ] last December.

Bird earned an Australia A call-up for the 2012 tour of England [ Images ] and then won a place in the national squad for the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka later the same year after starting the 2012-13 Sheffield Shield season in excellent form again.

1st Test, Day 4: Indian spinners on fire in Chennai
Last updated on: February 25, 2013 17:43 IST

A defiant unbeaten 75 by debutant Moises Henriques ensured Australia [ Images ] took the opening Test against India [ Images ] to a fifth day.

-Scorecard

Needing 193 runs to make the home team bat again, the visitors collapsed to 175 for nine before their last wicket pair got into the act.

At stumps on Day Four, Australia had made 232 for nine (84 overs), an overall lead of 40.

Henriques’s 124-ball knock was inclusive of six hits to the fence and two over it and he put on 57 runs for the final wicket with Nathan Lyon, the latter surviving 47 balls for his eight.

R Ashwin was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of five for 90, to go with his seven wickets in the Australian first innings. Harbhajan Singh [ Images ] and Ravindra Jadeja [ Images ] took two wickets apiece.

Morning session:

India (57 runs, 13.3 overs, two wickets):

When Dhoni [ Images ] reverse swept Lyon to the third man boundary, in what was the second ball of the day, it made clear the Indian intent. The home team was going to do everything possible to avoid batting a second time on a wicket that had already deteriorated.

The Indian captain helped himself to another boundary in the spinner’s second over before smashing one over the long-on fence four balls later. He also smashed Pattinson over mid-off for another four.

However, it was the Australian quick, who had the last laugh, ending Dhoni’s adventure by having him caught behind in what was his third over -- the sixth of the day.

The Indian captain’s 265-ball knock was inclusive of two dozen boundaries and half-a-dozen hits over the fence. He was involved in a record ninth wicket stand with Bhuvneshwar Kumar that yielded 140 runs.

The enterprising nature of Dhoni’s innings notwithstanding, his dismissal meant he remained third on the list of highest scores by a wicket-keeper, behind Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower [ Images ] (232) and New Zealand [ Images ]’s Brendon McCullum [ Images ] (225), both having come against India.

Dhoni’s wicket also helped Pattinson complete a well-deserved five-wicket haul; the young bowler’s third, but first since his debut series against New Zealand in 2011.

Kumar and Ishant Sharma [ Images ] (four not out) added a further 26 runs for the final wicket before Peter Siddle [ Images ] ended the former’s resistance, having him caught by Clarke at mid-off.

India added 57 runs to their overnight total (in 13.3 overs) to be dismissed for 572, a first innings lead of 192.

Australia (34 runs, 16 overs, one wicket):

David Warner, having suffered a bout of gastro-enteritis, didn’t open the batting in the second innings. It was Shane Watson [ Images ] who came in to bat with Ed Cowan.

There was more success in store for the home team in the first session -- Ashwin having Watson (17) caught by Virender Sehwag [ Images ] at slip to reduce the visitors to 34 for one at lunch (16 overs).

Post-lunch session (94 runs, 33 overss, four wickets):

The pathetic habit that the Indian spinners are infamous for -- excessive appealing, rather appealing every ball -- was visible from the very outset in the second session.

There were glimpses of it in the first, but it went full throttle soon after lunch.

Almost every delivery was followed by a loud appeal, palpably supported by the hyper-excited crowd. And it was Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharamsena who became the first to buckle under the pressure.

Cowan (32) was given out leg before to Ashwin. The batsman didn’t seem too happy with the decision but had to leave nonetheless.

Phillip Hughes came and went, caught at slip by Sehwag off Jadeja. He didn’t bother to trouble the scorers. Australia had lost three of its second innings wickets with just 65 runs on board, and close to five sessions to play.

David Warner (23) helped Michael Clarke [ Images ] put on 36 runs for the fourth wicket, taking the visitors past the 100-run mark, before he was adjudged leg before to Harbhajan.

Matthew Wade (8) didn’t survive for long either, mistiming a sweep off Harbhajan and seeing his stumps getting shattered. In fact, Harbhajan’s third spell (4-2-9-2) undermined the fact that he that he had struggled in the match.

Australia had reached 128 for five at tea (49 overs).

Post-tea session (104 runs, 35 overs, four wickets):

It took three balls after resumption for Ashwin to strike. It was a big wicket as well.

Clarke (31) had been trapped leg before. And, with the dismissal of the Australian captain, ended the hopes of his team.

Peter Siddle (2) was cleaned up by Jadeja soon after and Ashwin returned to have Pattinson (11) caught by Sehwag at first slip.

Mitchell Starc (8) hit Ashwin for a couple of boundaries over midwicket but it was the bowler who had the last laugh, having the Australian caught by Tendulkar at mid-on. The wicket helped Ashwin achieve a second successive five-wicket haul in the match.

Henriques and Lyon ensured the visitors lived to fight another day.

Ashwin shines with the ball again![/b
February 25, 2013 17:56 IST

He was playing in his very first Test on his home ground, the MA Chidambaram stadium.

And he ensured his debut would be a memorable one in more ways than one.

He took seven wickets in the Australian first innings and removed both the openers -- Ed Cowan and Shane Watson [ Images ] -- early when the visitors came out to bat for a second time on the fourth day.

However, it was his dismissal of captain Michael Clarke [ Images ] (31), a centurion in the first innings that ensured the result would happen earlier than expected.

The offie went on to take the wicket of James Pattinson (11) and Mitchell Starc (8) to have figures of five for 90 on the day, to go with seven for 103 in the first innings.

It also gave the 26-year-old a 10-wicket haul (rather 12) for the match, the second such instance in his fledgling career after he had picked up 12 wickets against New Zealand [ Images ] -- six wickets apiece in each innings -- in Hyderabad last August.

Ravichandran Ashwin is our performer of the day.

India vs Aus, Day 4: Where India got it right
February 25, 2013 18:11 IST

Playing two medium pacers on a drab Chennai wicket didn’t make sense.

Australia [ Images ] at least could say pace is their strength, but for Team India [ Images ] it made no sense.

The think tank made a blunder when they handed Bhuvneshwar Kumar a Test debut at the expense of Pragyan Ojha [ Images ], India’s best bowler in the series against England [ Images ].

With his pace, rather lack of it, it would be a surprise if Kumar will ever make an impact in the five-day format.

As it happened, Kumar and Ishant Sharma [ Images ] - who happened to hand Kumar HIS Test cap – bowled 30 overs between them in the Australian first innings and failed to make any sort of impact whatsoever.

Having ensured India a healthy lead (192 runs) with a blistering 224, the Indian captain quick to hand the ball to his spinners.

R Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh [ Images ] and Ravindra Jadeja [ Images ] answered to the captain’s call and shared the wickets between them, hastening the Australian downfall in the second innings.

Not getting the two medium pacers to bowl much – Kumar didn’t bowl at all – in the second innings was, therefore, a smart move. And that is precisely where India, rather Dhoni [ Images ], got it right.

BCCI, CA officials review security in Hyderabad
February 25, 2013 18:21 IST

BCCI and Cricket Australia [ Images ] officials on Monday reviewed the security arrangements in Hyderabad and met the city's police commissioner ahead of the second cricket Test between India [ Images ] and Australia, scheduled to be held from March 2-5.

Security has been beefed up in the wake of last Thursday's serial blasts in the city.

Senior board officials along with the security head of Cricket Australia assessed the Rajiv Gandhi [ Images ] International Stadium, the venue for the match, though Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) secretary M V Sridhar called it a routine affair.

Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI general manager - cricket development, came from Mumbai [ Images ] for the meeting.

The HCA official said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy "assured them of full security".

"He said he would not compromise on anything. He assured us full support," Sridhar said.

He also added that if the Australians have any specific demands, the host association will consider them.

Terror struck the city killing 12 people and injuring 84 others last Thursday evening when two blasts ripped through a crowded area close to a cluster of bus stands in Dilsukhnagar area.

India enjoys pole position in ODI team rankings
February 25, 2013 18:27 IST

Team India [ Images ] took an outright lead on top of the one-day table following England's [ Images ] 2-1 victory in the three-match series against New Zealand [ Images ], which saw them lose two ratings points in the latest ICC [ Images ] ODI Championship ranking in Dubai [ Images ].

England, however, retained their number two spot and now leads third-ranked Australia [ Images ] by just one ratings point and fourth-ranked South Africa [ Images ] by five ratings points with just 100 days to go to the start of ICC Champions Trophy [ Images ].

With India and Australia not scheduled to play any ODIs before the April cut-off date of ICC ODI Championship Table, South Africa is the only side that can push India and England down the order when it takes on Pakistan in a five-match series from 10 March.

The only way South Africa can leapfrog England and add another $75,000 to its account is by beating Pakistan 4-1 or better. If South Africa wins 4-1, then the Proteas will join England on 117 ratings points but will be ranked above Alastair Cook's [ Images ] side when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

If South Africa makes a clean sweep of the ODI series, then it will jump three places to claim top spot from India, which, in turn will mean it will win $175,000 as well as the ODI shield. These two are presented to the side that tops the ODI table at the 1 April cut-off date.

The batting table is still headed by South Africa's Hashim Amla [ Images ], followed by his captain AB de Villiers [ Images ] in second place and India's Virat Kohli [ Images ] and his skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni [ Images ] retaining the third and fourth place respectively. Suresh Raina [ Images ] has lost one place to be at the 12th spot.

In the ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, R Ashwin has improved one spot to share the 13th spot with two others, while Ravindra Jadeja [ Images ] is still at the number nine position of the table, which is still headed by Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal [ Images ].

The ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders is still headed by Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez [ Images ], with Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan in second place, Shane Watson [ Images ] of Australia in third, Sri Lankan Angelo Mathews [ Images ] and Jadeja in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Akram steps down from KKR bowling coach's post
February 25, 2013 18:52 IST

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram [ Images ] stepped down from the post of mentor and bowling coach of IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders [ Images ] citing personal reasons.

Akram has been an integral part of the team for the past three seasons and also been a part of the core team along with chief coach Trevor Bayliss and captain Gautam Gambhir [ Images ] that helped in devising the strategy for the champion side.

According to team management, Akram has expressed his desire to spend more time with his family as his two sons Taimur and Akbar are barely in their teens.

Akram has been leaving out of suitcase for a number of years now due to his increased media commitments as well as the hectic travelling and camps related to Indian Premier League [ Images ].

KKR CEO Venky Mysore in a media release issued by the franchise stated: "Wasim Akram will be badly missed. He is a legend and a great motivator to have around the team. However, we fully appreciate the reason why he will be unavailable. We hope to work with him in future."

Meanwhile, Indian team's fielding coach Trevor Penney, who has earlier worked with the now defunct Deccan Chargers [ Images ] will be joining KKR as their fielding coach.

In another minor development, Joy Bhattacharjya, the team director for the previous five seasons will now be seen in the role of an advisor (content development and management).

Adrian Le Roux, Andrew Leipus and Vijay Dahiya will however remain in the support staff.

Australia's aggression cost them, says Jadeja
February 25, 2013 18:55 IST

The Australian team's policy of trying to play aggressive cricket has caused their downfall as they sit on the verge of defeat in the first Test match against India [ Images ], all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja [ Images ] said in Chennai on Monday.

Australia [ Images ] are on the verge of losing the series-opener as they have a mere 40-run lead with just one wicket in hand, at stumps on the fourth day of the Test match.

Asked to compare the batting of England [ Images ], who defeated India in the last home series, and the current Australian team, Jadeja said the tourists look to bat aggressively but it turned out to be the wrong move on a wicket supporting the spinners.

"Australian have this ego...they try to play more positive. If they have played three, four overs maiden, they show aggression, so that they don't come under pressure. But this wicket has been turning through the match, and we've bowled well… Ashwin has bowled well, Bhajju pa [Harbhajan Singh [ Images ]] has bowled well. Everyone has played his role," Jadeja said.

Ashwin took five wickets in the second innings and Harbhajan Singh scalped two.

"Now, we've got to take their last wicket quickly and the runs that are left to score, 50-55 or whatever, get them," Jadeja, who took two wickets in the second innings, said.

The all-rounder praised the pitch at the M A Chidamabram stadium, saying it still has something for fast bowlers despite favouring spinners.

"It's a good wicket. In Indian conditions, there are such wickets. In Test cricket, you win only if you get 20 wickets. And the centre of the wicket is not damaged, so it's good for fast bowlers. Whatever wear and tear has happened, it's happened due to the footmarks of the bowlers, and it's at the ends of the wicket. I think it's a good wicket for Test cricket," Jadeja said.

"There is turn in the wicket, everyone knows that, everyone can see that. But sometimes, there’s more turn than usual, which you don’t really need. Mainly, we’ll have to bowl in the right areas."

'I was in disbelief that Clarke got out for under 100'
Last updated on: February 25, 2013 19:12 IST

Had it not been for Moises Henriques Team India would be celebrating on Tuesday.

- Scorecard | Match Report

However, the debutant's resilient 75 not out has not only ensured Australia avoid innings defeat but also taken the game to a fifth day.

Though the result seems like a foregone conclusion, with Henriques having only delayed the inevitable, the player isn't willing to give up yet.

"We haven't lost this Test yet. There's certainly hope," he said, in a media interaction shortly after the end of day's play.
