Total telephone subscriber base in India rose marginally in April on account of increase in the number of wireless users. Total telephone user base stood at 105.88 crore at the end of March, sectoral regulator TRAI said today.

The wireless subscriber base increased to 103.42 crore at the end of April, from 103.36 crore in the previous month.

At the end of April 2016, private operators held 91.20 per cent market share of the wireless subscribers, while state-run BSNL and MTNL had a market share of only 8.80 percent.

As for the wireline, the subscriber base declined from 2.52 crore at the end of March 2016 to 2.50 crore in April.

The overall tele-density in India declined slightly from 83.36 at the end of March to 83.32 in April.

The country's top operator Bharti Airtel added 9.78 lakh wireless subscribers to take its base to 25.22 crore, while Reliance added 1.10 lakh users to take its subscriber base to 10.25 crore at the end of April.

While Vodafone added 46,660 subscribers to take its total number to 19.79 crore, Idea Cellular and Tata Teleservices lost 3.87 lakh and 3.97 lakh users, respectively. At the end of April, Idea had a user-base of 17.46 crore, while that of Tata Teleservices stood at 5.97 crore.

Aircel brought in 5.72 lakh additional users to grow its base to 8.76 crore at the end of April.
Telenor lost 25,496 users, while Videocon lost 14.09 lakh users in the said month taking their total subscriber base to 5.24 crore and 31.63 lakh, respectively.

State-run MTNL added 11,591 subscribers taking its base to 35.72 lakh in the said period, while BSNL added 11.39 lakh users taking its subscriber base to 8.74 crore. Sistema Shyam Teleservices also lost 42,290 subscribers.

The number of broadband subscribers increased from 14.97 crore at the end of March to 15.10 crore at the end of April.
