Reliance has entered into exclusive partnership with WhatsApp to provide unlimited access for prepaid GSM subscribers.

Reliance Communications has announced to offer unlimited WhatsApp and Facebook access for prepaid subscribers. The new plan for Reliance prepaid subscribers will let them access WhatsApp and Facebook for an additional cost of Rs 16 per month but without any more data charges for using either of the services. The WhatsApp plan once subscribed automatically gets renewed every month unless the user chooses to unsubscribe.

The social network Facebook and instant messaging service WhatsApp have become widely popular amongst the young generation of India. The Facebook social network offers the users to stay in touch with friends by sharing news updates, photos, videos, and notes. Whereas the WhatsApp is an instant messaging service that connects users by using their mobile phone numbers as registered account numbers.

Reliance's new WhatsApp Plan aims at offering unlimited access to WhatsApp and Facebook for Rs 16 per month which equates to Rs 192 grossly for year. For that amount, users can access and use both WhatsApp and Facebook without having to pay anything extra for the services. However, there is no clarity on whether the consumers will be charged for uploading photos and videos directly from the phone.

Reliance has also launched new My College Plan for the students that offer unlimited social media access to WhatsApp and Facebook for just Rs 16 per month. Once this plan is activated, it also offers discount in tariffs. Students can call and send SMS within the specified group at just 5 paise. Sending a group message to the college group would cost the students just Rs 3 by sending the message to 51112.

The new My College Plan is made available to several colleges across the country. The students can find out whether their college's ID from this page and accordingly send SMS to start this plan. Again, the My College Plan is available to prepaid GSM subscribers only. Students need to send this message: SUB (College ID) to the 51111 number.

Sanjay Behl, group head - brand and marketing, Reliance Communications said, "We are thrilled to offer the first of its kind offering of sharing unlimited text, music, pictures and videos to our customers through our exclusive partnership with WhatsApp in India. We are confident that 'WhatsApp Plan' and 'My College Plan' with unlimited usage of WhatsApp is set to provide a compelling new experience with incredible affordability to smartphone users across the country on our superior network along with free Facebook surfing as an introductory offer for a limited period. We are hoping this offer to trigger a significant shift of youth customers using Smartphones to our superior network."

This is first of its kind social media plan involving WhatsApp for Indian GSM subscribers.
