Abhinav Mukund to lead Tamil Nadu

The suspense is over. Abhinav Mukund will lead Tamil Nadu in the upcoming Ranji season.

The Hindu has learnt from reliable sources that the left-handed opener will captain the State side for the third year in succession. Ahead of the decision made by the selectors, there was some speculation about who would lead the side after Tamil Nadu had a forgettable last season.

The State selectors had postponed the naming of the captain even after the pre-season camp for probables got underway at Dehradun on September 26.

There were other contenders in the fray. B. Indrajith was in the race but a fitness concern that restricted his throwing ability hurt his chances. Finally, it was between Abhinav and B. Aparajith.

Ahead of making the call, the selectors had waited for feedback from new team coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar who had one-on-one interactions with all the members of the squad to get their views.

Eventually, former India opener Abhinav’s experience, stature in the side, willingness to shoulder responsibility and the fact that he is still only 26 swung things his way.

Abhinav, who led Tamil Nadu to the Ranji final a couple of seasons back, has 7,672 runs in 109 First Class games at 46.56.

It was also learnt that promising all-rounder Vijay Shankar will not be available for the first few matches as he is recovering from a knee surgery. Tamil Nadu begins its campaign against Mumbai at Lahli from October 6.

M Ashwin left out of Ranji squad

The state selection committee on Friday picked the Tamil Nadu Ranji squad for the first two games against Mumbai (in Lahli) and Railways (in Bilaspur) this season on expected lines, albeit with a few surprises.

The core of last year’s team has been retained, with players who performed well in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) getting the nod for the 16-member squad announced by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Highly-placed sources in the body informed that L Balaji and Avinash will be the bowling and fielding coach respectively.

A glaring omission is that of Murugan Ashwin, who was a part of the India Red squad at the recently-held Duleep Trophy. “The three spinners (Malolan Rangarajan, Rahil Shah and Aushik Shrinivas) have delivered in this format. Thus, Ashwin isn’t in the team. In case one of the three doesn’t do well, he will get his chance,” explained selection committee chairman S Sharath.

Abhinav Mukund, Kaushik Gandhi, L Suryaprakash, Washington Sundar and N Jagadeesan — all of them were openers in TNPL — have been named. “Jagadeesan and Kaushik will be in the lower order,” said B Ramprakash, Tamil Nadu’s Ranji selector from the districts.

“We have covered all bases. I think this the best available side. We have given importance to experience, and also to the boys who have done well in TNPL. Abhinav, Suryaprakash and Washington are the openers. I see Jagadeesan as a floater. We are keen to have Kaushik at No 6, a slot that was previously held by R Prasanna,” Sharath elaborated.

For Thangarasu Natarajan, it is a comeback of sorts. The left-arm pacer represented the state in only one match last year after being named among 177 bowlers with suspect actions by the BCCI. “TNPL helped me grab attention. I expected the call. I have done well for Jolly Rovers, and also in other tournaments. I am keen to impress if I get to play,” he said.

Team: Abhinav Mukund (c), B Aparajith, B Indrajith, MS Washington Sundar, N Jagadeesan, Dinesh Karthik, J Kousik, L Suryapprakash, Rahil Shah, Malolan Rangarajan, Aushik Srinivas, Aswin Crist, M Mohammed, K Vignesh, T Natarajan, Kaushik Gandhi.

Saurashtra to miss Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja in Ranji squad

Saurashtra will miss the services of their key players — Cheteshwar Puajra and Ravindra Jadeja — as the Saurashtra Cricket Association today announced the 17-member squad for the first three Ranji Trophy matches. Jaydev Shah, who has broken a record of playing most matches as a captain last year, will lead the side that will play its first game against Rajasthan at Chennai on October 6. The BCCI has decided that all matches of the Ranji Trophy season would be played at neutral venues. When asked about the BCCI’s decision, Saurashtra head coach Sitanshu Kotak said it did not matter whether the team plays at the home ground or away.

“Last year, before reaching to the final, we had won nine matches and most of the matches were won while playing away,” he said. “We need to play better cricket and the 17-member squad declared by the SCA is very much balanced side. We have a good combination of experienced and talented new comers and it’s difficult for the team management to pick 11 best players out of the 17,” Kotak said. He expressed happiness that two Saurashtra players, Jadeja and Pujara, are playing for the national side against the visiting New Zealand team in the ongoing Test series.

“Any team wants to have these two players (Pujara and Jadeja) and the side will definitely miss their services. But we have some other new players, who have ability to deliver their best,” he said. Punjab’s Amitoze Singh, Kushang Patel from Gujarat and Maharashtra’s Sunil Yadav will play first time for the Saurashtra in the tournament. Sheldon Jackson, who had hit two consecutive centuries in Duleep Trophy recently, would be the main stay in batting for Saurashtra to be supported by skipper Jaydev Shah, Sagar Jogiyani, Avi Barot, Arpit Vasavada. Jaydev Unadkat would lead the bowling attack alongwith Deepak Puniya, Amitoze Singh and Chirag Jani.

The squad: Jaydev Shah (Capt), Sheldon Jackson, Sagar Jogiyani, Avi Barot, Arpit Vasavada, Jaydev Unadkat, Chirag Jani, Dharmendra Jadeja, Samarth Vyas, Shaurya Sanandiya, Mohsin Dodiya, Deepak Puniya, Hardik Rathod, Vandit Jivrajani, Kushang Patel, Amitoze Singh and Sunil Yadav.
